newdotnet is something you don't want on your computer.  To get rid of it d/l, install, update and run Spybot Search & Destroy  - also Ad-Aware.  They're both free programs and do a great job getting rid of spyware, such as newdotnet.

But be careful...One of the components newdotnet installs is a Winsock 2 "layered service provider". If it's not properly removed, you'll lose Internet access after removing newdotnet. See this article for details.

One response in this thread warns about removing the newdotnet - however in reading that warning it appears that "manual removal" was the concern, but gave no warning about using S&D or Ad-Aware to remove it.

One response seems to be claiming that it isn't really spyware in the first place.  However, the fact that the two most widely used and accepted programs for getting rid of spyware both feel it is. 

Either way - it probably got there because someone clicked on an ad and suddenly found it on their computer and didn't remember installing it (which was the case with one computer user whose computer I cleaned up for them) and that's enough for anyone to get it off their system.  It seems pretty sneaky to install a program for someone without them even realizing its happening.

Actually, if you look at the latest versions of SpyBot and AdAware you will see that both application developers have decided to no longer target the software for removal.  Spybot stopped targetting the software in May 2004 and AdAware stopped targetting the software in August 2004.
