RUNDLL ERROR

I have been experiencing the problem I describe below for about a year now. When I start up my computer, immediately after the Desktop comes on, the following error message pops up:

                RUNDLL

                  Error loading c:\windows\cfgmgr52.dll

The especied module could not be found.

                                    OK

Almost simultaneously a folder window appears with the title “SYSTEM32” and overlaps the error message. I close the window and then click on the OK button of the error message. The dialog box disappears and I can continue to use my PC as usual except for the fact that from time to time, it freezes and recently this is happening more frequently and the Blue Screen is also popping up quite often.

Whenever either of these two things occurs I simply shut the computer off by pressing the start button on the CPU and then reboot the computer and continue whatever I was doing, although in some cases I have to start from scratch because of the loss of unsaved data.

As I said, I have lived with this situation for at least a year but it is now becoming annoying and unbearable. I have no idea of what could be the cause of this error and my only recollection is that this began after my computer was infected with a virus. On that occasion, with the use of Norton I got rid of all the affected files and now when I run Norton Antivirus it comes up with a clean slate. I believe the freezing of the PC and the Blue Screen have their origin in the Rundll error but I do not know how to correct it.

Can anyone offer some help. I am a dummy when it comes to computers.

My machine is a Dell Dimension XPS Gen 2 Home Edition, Pentium ( R )  4, CPU 3.20GHz,Ram 512MB, Tag  404TZ41,Express Code 8715246337

Juan.

    Wilcoxgeo,

As indicated here you have the Booked Space malware on your system. Download Ad-aware from here, Spybot from here and Microsoft AntiSpyware from here. Check online for updates to their databases then run them and delete all the spyware they identify.

If the error message about cfgmgr52.dll persists, try the removal steps here or download HijackThis from here. Run it and post the log it generates here where the experts can analyze it and provide corrective measures.

The system32 folder problem may be corrected along with the above, but if not, see this.

Denny, I followed your advice and downloaded the software, did the updates and then ran the scans. The results were positive in so far as the RUNDLL error is concerned. The PC is not freezing as before but I still have the System32 Folder issue to resolve. I looked at the document you referred me to that may offer a solution to correct the problem but frankly speaking, I am afraid to go there as it looks like a very risky venture for someone like me with little or no know-how.

I think I will live with present improved situation for a while and monitor the System 32 problem. Should things deteriorate, I will revert to you guys. Thanks for the help you have given me.

    Juan.

    Wilcoxgeo,

Should you decide to try to modify the registry as the document describes you can eliminate the risk by going to the registry key (the Run key in the left pane) that might be altered and before making any changes going to File|Export. You can then save the key's contents as they exist in a registry (*.reg) file. In the event a change causes problems, you can restore the key by either double-clicking that *.reg fle or right-clicking it and selecting "Merge" from the context menu.

However, if you are uncomfortable with changing the registry the system32 problem is cosmetic and can be accepted.
