Scandisk problems

When I try to do a thorough Scandisk test I get the following: Scandisk has restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quiting some running programs may enable Scandisk to finish soon.

I have no programs running. What does writing to this drive mean? What should I do?

It means something is running in the background like a screensaver. Try running scan disk in safe mode.

    wind123,

    See this.

To boot to Safe Mode put a non-bootable floppy disk in your A:\ drive. Restart the computer. When the "Non-system disk..." error message appears, remove the floppy diskette and press F8 twice. Select Safe Mode from the menu that appears.

Check MSCONFIG.  You may have more programs running in the background than you think.
