I have a dell 8250p42003 winxp sp1 home edition, and I am asking is there a web site or a link that shows a startup list that can help you disable some that are not needed in the startup category. I know selective startup is supposed to only be used for troubleshooting and that is what I am doing, but at the same time do you know of list I can go to that explains the start up in winxp and which ones is ok to leave unchecked. In the 98 version you could actually tell what the startup items basically meant, but in the winxp version, it all looks like jibberish to me. Dont understand what the items stand for.
Thanks to all your replys. I tried the first one on the replies but it really did not list all the items on my startup. Like something called BCMSMMSG and other items, but it did help some. I tried yours Liche and I really dont under stand what to do with the link. I know I need to learn more, but I am trying. But thanks to all who replied it has been a big help.
Just Highlight the links & Copy then Paste to Browser Address box.
To Highlight the link address place cursor at start , double click holding 2nd click on & move cursor to end of link , then right click & select Copy.
Right Copy doesn't show for some Browsers so just press Ctrl+C keys together.
Then right click on Browser Address box & select Paste.
If you read the link the information in the link that Warren H. posted carefully, you will find a link to a more complete list of possible startup programs:
either click on the list link in the top line, or (more convenient, I find) download the zip or exe file and save to disk, use it from there. For your information, if you go to the list, if you enter the name you want info about in search, it brings it up. For exampole the one you mention gives the following:
BCMSMMSG Y BCMSMMSG.exe BCM voicemodem driver. Required for dial-up if you have one of these modems .
The Y means 'normally leave in start up' (as explained at the bottom of the page in the above link)
Just for completeness I have updated the link to Pac's Portal on my "Uncheck" site and have added text to indicate that the information on that page is designed for users of Windows 9X operating systems (with an additional link to Pac's Portal for XP users).
Thank you all again, and now know how to do the site. Jrosenfeld thanks fo rlooking up that one startup and explaing how to work the site. Big time help as always and also big help to the other people who replied also. Everyone is so darn helpful here, that is why I come here. Everyone just gives straight honest answers. One day I will get good at this and try helping other people to.
Warren H.
