I'm having a common hanging problem with my system. I haven't updated much of my software recently, but below is a more detailed description of what happens.
When I have been accessing certain websites or loading certain programs, the applications hang and stop responding. I am forced to restart the computer as all the buttons that could be used to close the program do not load. I have tried CTRL+ALT+DELETE but it doesn't load up. The cursor changes to the 'busy' animation and then stops, after which nothing happens.
I have tested my patience with it, and after a few minutes, it makes a response and quickly loads all the programs that I tried running.
I have noticed that when a program hangs it may say (Not Responding) in the title bar, the icon for the program changes to a little white box thing and the 'busy' animation for the cursor is displayed.
I have a list below of what I think could be affecting/causing this problem.
.NET Framework 2 - it was a recent update that I installed
Microsoft AntiSpyware - on one occasion I managed to load Task Manager and noticed that the Microsoft AntiSpyware application (gcasdtserv.exe) was taking up about 90% of the CPU. I wasn't trying to load that program, so it must be the background program that may have been causing that.
DivX 6 - recently installed, don't know why it would affect loading programs and websites.
I installed the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service a little while back which is meant to speed up the shutdown process (I tried it out because Norton Internet Security (which is another possibilty for this current problem) was causing it to hang on shutdown).
I will try to post more information on here soon, sorry if it doesn't seem like a lot of information - I know that things like this are annoying, repetitive, and can be difficult to resolve.
If anybody has any clues, please tell me and I will be willing enough to try it out. Thanks for your help.

Might have a look through the Event Viewer (Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer) logs to find some clues what specific programs are causing the problems. The error codes can reveal a good bit with some Google searching.
Okay, I'll have a look through there then - Application has 3,379 events so I'll get back to you if I have a problem, otherwise I will use the Help and Support Center thing or Google to find an answer to the errors.
I never thought about using Event Viewer! I know that it exists, it just never occured to me! Thanks for the tip; it will be useful for future problems I may have.
I just uninstalled an RSS reader called BlogBot - I think it may have caused some of the 'hanging' while in Internet Explorer and also may have caused some of the error dialogs I've been getting recently. I'll see what happens without it (I don't like RSS feeds anyway).
I might do a spyware and virus scan to check that nothing harmful is affecting it.

I downloaded the update given at Step 1 and installed it (it was already previously installed so not much of point really). I will go through the list to find out what is causing it.
If anybody knows exactly what is causing the problem as it may take me some time to go through that list then it would be really helpful if you could give me some ideas and post them on here. So thank you to anyone who does!
Here are the errors that I found for today:

I should think that although the errors seem to be occuring on-line it may well not be a problem with IE, per se. You might want to do a repair on IE just to eliminate the possibility and there is also a new version of the .NET (2.0) available for download on the Windows Update site that could bear on the errors you are receiving. Other than that and minus additional relevant input from someone else, you may have to furthur isolate the conditions under which the errors occur...what sites give you the problem, types of files being accessed, site content, etc., etc. It could also be one of your background programs causing the problem when it activates...an antivirus, for example. About all I can suggest is to be attentive to details and try to be aware of the conditions that exist when the hang occurs and go from there...sorry for the lack of a more meaningful response.
I know that it does seem that this case can be difficult to isolate or even determine what is causing the problem, but some programs have been hanging even if it hasn't been in IE. In the future, I will keep a log of the times and when it happens and what I was trying to do at the time.
I do think that it could be Microsoft AntiSpyware because it's a Beta, but I don't know - it would be more likely to be Norton Internet Security as I had problems with that and access to the Internet before (an overload in different files versions submitted to Program Control caused it to stop all but IE from getting to the Internet.)
I will uninstall the .NET Framework 2.0 and see what happens - I also have plenty of links about repairing IE so I will get round to that at some point as well.
I'll get back to this post when I've got some results! Thanks very much for your ideas and help anyway.
I was writing an email in Word when all of a sudden, I switched the window to close it, went back to Word and it hung up on me! White logo up top and white screen apart from title bar and taskbar!!! I lost my whole email cause of this!!!
I opened up Word again to load the autosave and it hangs on me, clicking Save As or Open!!!
Windows open:
IE - Hotmail email message
IE - other Word document loaded in this window
Word - my email message (overtype was activated in Hotmail so i went to Word so i could write my email properly)
When it hung up on me I went to Task Manager and ended all the uneccessary programs like the Dell Support Agent, IE New Window Maximizer, UHPservice, adsgone, epson status monitor, giant ms antispyware and it still didnt load my document! AAHH!!
I went to Event Viewer and there is nothing in there that happened at this time!
I uninstalled the .NET Framework 2 about 10 minutes before opening the windows above.
Someone please help me!! What do i need to fix??? Why is it doing this??? I WANT MY DOCUMENT BACK!!!

Okay, I may have found the reason why it keeps hanging.
I have noticed that a few minutes after starting up my computer, after I've run a few update programs, that it suddenly hangs in front of everything for about 2 minutes. I have been able to force the computer out of the hang in some cases by inserting any CD which forces it to load the autoplay program (the only other alternative is turning it off, which ironically closes all programs very quickly).
So that means that it's a program in the startup, I think - or one of the programs I run when it hangs.
I will try out disabling each startup item and seeing if the hang still occurs. I will get back to here if I have a problem, thanks for your time and help.
I really need to try out disabling some things from my startup - I will try it out soon because my intellectually challenged users on my computer don't know what to do when it hangs!
I was studying the TASKMGR.EXE program to see what was hanging and at one point I noticed that C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wuauclt.exe was taking up loads of CPU so I disabled it from startup (Windows Updates in MSCONFIG) - I haven't really tested to see if it helps but I don't think it does.
As of recent, I have added TASKMGR.EXE to my own startup and so far, for some reason, it seems to be stopping the hanging. While its been open I may have been ending a couple of unnecessary programs like DVDlauncher.exe - Even if TASKMGR is not stopping the hang, at least I can see what may be causing it.
I've been studying the logs in Event Viewer and noticed that this error comes up a lot:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10010
Date: 04/12/2005
Time: 1:05:23 PM
User: DELLPC\Home Users
Computer: DELLPC
Description:
The server {72C2714F-4478-11D3-B537-00902771A435} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
The server number (or classid as Help and Support calls it), after scanning through the registry, is something to do with Symantec - proabably the program Norton Internet Security 2005 - I have had a couple of problems with this before and reinstalled it a couple of times so I might reinstall it again to see if the problem is resolved - does mean I have to download a million updates for it though!
Anyway thanks for reading and thanks for help if you can.

Robert...
Might have a look through the Event Viewer (Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer) logs to find some clues what specific programs are causing the problems. The error codes can reveal a good bit with some Google searching.
