Unable to boot past Windows XP Home screen.

My nephew's Dimension 2400 cannot boot past the Windows XP Home screen. A blue box appears with the statements: "Unable to locate components. Application has failed to start because WINSVR was not found."  There is a black background behind the blue box and there are no application icons visible. The workstation completely locks up. I had him to try to boot up using the Resource CD, but the BIOS runs past the CD burner. How can I get his station to read the Resource CD and run a Quick Test Diagnostics on his whole system? Thanks...

I don't believe the Resource CD is a bootable CD.  Try booting from the XP CD and do a repair installation.

    RenoAL,

If the diagnostics partition has not been removed through an XP reinstall or repartitioning you can run the diagnostics by booting to the diagnostic partition as described here.

    maxd,

It's applicable only if the problem first appeared after installing SP2, and there is no indication that this is the case here.

I realize there was no indication of a recent install of SP2 but the error message googled to microsoft.com left me thinking it had to be SP2-related. Thanks.

    Maxd,

You are correct in that the root cause of the problem was SP2 related. After my nephew downloaded the SP2 patch on his station, it seems to have cleared up his application problems.

    Thanks.

    Denny Denham,

Thanks for the advice on downloading the SP2 patch. This seems to have been the root cause of the problem. After my nephew loaded the SP2 patch, it appears to have resolved the applications issue.

    Very much appreciated.

    jmwills,

It appears that the root cause of the problem was the Service Pack issue. He was using SP1a - after downloading SP2 patch, it appears that the applications problem has disappeared.

    Thanks for your advisement.
