Last night i was on the internet and was asked if i wanted the latest microsoft updates. I accepted and downloaded them. After that i restarted the computer in clean boot (because i was going to play a graphically intensive game). When it restarted i found that the toolbar and start options had been set to "classic style" and wouldn't return to normal windows xp! But that was the least of my problems because I couldn't play any music or games because there where problems with the sound card and video card. i checked my Device Manager and it was empty! It's as if i didn't have any drivers at all! I can't use System Recovery because for some reason it was turned off. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Wait a second...you were on the Internet and something asked if you wanted to d/l the latest Windows updates? I hate to tell you but you probably downloaded something other than a Windows update. If you can boot to safe mode run an antivirus scan and see what turns up. Some free ones are listed below. Don't have more than one running at a time.
You may have to post this over on the
Virus/Spyware Removal forum if an AV scan can't fix the problem. They may have you post a HijackThis log but more on that later.
You may want to read about this symptom when there are problems with XP's plug and play service:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311504
But also note that trojan 'Apropos' causes this symptom too, so you may want to do the malware scans that were already recommended, and if necessary, google for its removal tool.
