Apple sounds Vista iPod corruption warning

Windows-using iPod owners have been advised to wait for the next release of iTunes jukebox software before upgrading to Windows Vista if they want to avoid "compatibility issues" between their favoured player and the new operating system.

According to Apple, these issues include an inability to play songs bought from the iTunes online store, an inability to update or restore iPod software, calendar and contacts synchronisation problems, and, worse of all, the corruption of data on the iPod.

    I heard some talk of this on a Podcast recently. (CNET Buzz Out Loud maybe?) Seems as if it's the UAC (User Access Control) that's the issue. There are workarounds available, such as turning UAC off or manually altering the rights on the Apple DRM files. They were also joking (perhaps with a hint of truthfullness) that Apple allowed this to happen on purpose (it's not as it this was untestable over the last few months) so that Apple could issue "warnings" about Vista incompatibilities after it's release. You never know.
     
    Apple will fix it of course, and soon I'll bet.

    Apple apps not ready for Vista

    How many of Apple's Windows-compatible applications are ready for Microsoft's latest operating system, Vista? According to the Mac maker's own tech support site... er... none of them are.

    Earlier this week it emerged that iTunes isn't yet ready to run on Vista, and neither is the iPod it seems. Apple's current advice is for iPod owners to wait until the next release of iTunes before upgrading from Windows XP to Vista.

    But iTunes isn't Apple's only Windows app - it also provides versions of Software Update, QuickTime, Bonjour, AirPort, iDisk Utility and AppleWorks for Microsoft's operating system. According to Apple's own Windows compatibility checklist page, last updated on 2 February, none of these programs should be run on Vista.
