Vista SP1 install fails

Just picked up an Inspiron 1720 notebook with Vista Home Premium and just cannot get SP1 to install.  I am aware that the Intel graphics driver and Sigmatel audio needed updates for Windows Update to show SP1 was an available fix; this was the first thing I did.

Upon 1st failed attempt I used msconfig to disable All startup programs, failed.

I disabled antivirus/uninstalled antivirus, failed.

I tried from safemode, failed.

I emailed a support request to Microsoft, after one unhelpful response I replied and am still waiting.

I've pretty much given up, but thought i'd give the support forum a try.

Any help is much appreciated.

Do you have McAfee Internet Security?  I did, and despite "disabling" everything I could find, SP1 would not install.  I competely removed it, and SP1 installed perfectly.

I can't promise any help, but you're going to need to be a lot more specific about how it failed if you want meaningful help.

The progress bar gets to about 3/4 of the distance across; it never reaches a restart.

When it fails I get various errors like 8007000D(the most common)

No McAfee ever. I've tried it with antivirus disabled as well as uninstalled(was Norton Internet Security -supplied by my ISP)

System Specs : Windows Vista Home Premium
    Intel Core 2 Duo T5450
    2 GB DDR2 Ram(667MHZ)
250 GB Sata HDD(>198 GB free)
    DVD-R
    Intel Graphics 965 Chipset(Driver Version 7.14.10.1437)
    Sigmatel Audio (Driver Version 6.10.0.5609)

    Last attempt was 800F0811.

Don't know what else I could possibly provide.

I found this site but the error descriptions didn't shed much light.

Some more updates... I discovered a patch for the MediaDirect software on the 1720 and after installing and rebooting I was able to apply SP1 without an error. However on restart it progresssed to about 99% of step 1 of 3, stopped and reverted stating it would try again on reboot. The second time it finished step 1 but stopped at the beginning of step 2 and then got stuck in a loop of reverting and restarting. I had to boot from the CD and repair using System Restore.

I visited Intel.com one last time and updated all the chipset drivers that were available. I rebooted and attempted SP1 again and was finally met with SUCCESS!
