there is nothing wrong with vista. my experiences have been that it is a faster, more stable OS than XP ever was. you can not fault an OS because some software developers and hardware manufacturers do not update or offer support for it. requiring new drivers is common with all operating systems. for example, you can't install a mac OS 9 hardware driver on the newer OS X versions, can you? and i'm sure once the newer mac snow leopard OS is released (or windows 7 for that matter) new drivers will have to be developed again.
there is absolutely no way that i would ever go back to XP.
perhaps explaining what it is about vista you dislike might generate some solutions to whatever problem(s) you are having.
Jerry, I totally agree with you on this issue. For people who have grown with software and hardware, you can remember almost having to write your own programs to get os to recognize any new hardware. The new os's have made it really easy comparitively. I use to say you had to be smarter than the machine, i dont think this holds true with the complicated systems we have now. it took how many years and service packs to get xp where it ended up. Whle i am happy with the computers i own that have xp. I wouldnt think about it for my xps. The software programmers have a challenge to keep up with the advances in technology in the new hardware. Soon you will tell your computer to turn on and off, tell it what program to run etc. I can also remember everyone hating xp, although not as much as the fiasco windowsME
I hated Vista aswell. Until I slipstreamed my Vista Business Edition upgrade disc with Service pack 1 and installed 4Gb of RAM on my 6400. The main problem, I'm having is with its long start up time from power switch > BIOs > log on screen.
I have a HP C6180 All in One Wireless Printer and it prints fine in Vista. If it is something to do with the post script file format, try downloading and installing pdf creator. Download the 0.9.5. version for Vista and do not disable pdf creator from msconfig, also wouldn't recommend the installing the tool bar, but I prefer internet explorer without tool bars, download pdf creator here, for a free program its high quality: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=57796&abmode=1
You can use this to "print" your file into another format such as a .tif or .pdf then open this with vista or Adobe Reader 9 and print. Do not open a poly-page document .tif file with Microsoft Office Picture Manager as it only shows and prints 1 page.
My printer had problems where RAM usage = 2Gb (All I had at the time) and the printer froze earlier on when I tried Vista with it that was for documents > 100 pages. Also, as stupid as it may be disabling the HP start up programs (hp digital imaging) on msconfig helped resolve issues I had with the printer disappearing from vista, I do not know if this will help you on a wired connection but mines runs better without the start up programs.
Will need to know the specs of your computer and laptop to be of any possible further help.
For example mine:
Hardware
Inspiron 6400 / E1505
T2130 (1.86 GHz Duo Core)
4Gb RAM
Intel integrated graphics (GM945)
Intel 4965 Wireless Card
Dell 355 Bluetooth Card
160Gb harddrive with Vista Business Upgrade SP1 (Upgrade over home basic SP0)
160Gb Harddrive with XP Professional SP3
HP C6180 All in One Printer
Software
Office 2007 Ultimate & Office 2003 Professional (Both installed)
McAfee Security Centre
Intervideo WINDVD 8 & 9
Dell Media Direct Version 4.7
Adobe Reader 9
PDF Creator 0.9.5
Dell Drivers
HP Driver for C6100 Series
Roxio
Minitab 15
Maple 11
Matlab 2007
Voloview
Klite Codec Pack
Switch Sound File Convertor
Windows Live Messenger with A-Patch Applied
WIN-RAR
Speakonia
(Some other programs I doubt you will have)
The reason I'm stating my software is the ones in Bold are most applicable to the situation, but you may be running some vista incompatible or not as well compatible as the newer versions software ruining your vista experience.
NOTE: If you have a Business or Ultimate license of Vista you may be able to exercise downgrade rights on your system.

I love Vista and you cannot pay me to go back to XP. My x64 vista is the most stable MS window version i have ever had.
Does it have a learning curve? Yes
Does it have driver issues? Yes too. But is that MS fault? Not in my book it's the MFR's and thier unwillingness to rework/provide them.
That' my .02
