When I booted up my Dell Studio XPS 16 laptop this morning, my processor was running maxed out. I noted multiple instances of dsc.exe were running, with the numbers of instances running fluctuating rapidly.
I saw an item somewhere on the web that it was probably the Dell support center causing the problem. When I tried to stop any instance of dsc.exe, it would fail to stop. I tried to uninstall Dell Support Center, but it isn't listed on my applications, just something called Dell Dock. I was afraid to uninstall that. I finally went into the Programs (x86) directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell Support Center\gs_agent and renamed dsc.exe so that it would not run on reboot. That stopped the problem.
I wanted to see if there was an update to the Support Center software, but I can't seem to find it on the Dell site. Anyone else having this problem? I went to the software downloads, pushed the Register System button, and it just goes into an endless loop of "examining your computer, please wait..."
You don't need or want the Support Center with Win 7. This is most likely a leftover from Vista. Your solution is fine if you don't want the hassle of reinstalling and doing a clean install. Dell support center should have been removed before upgrading.
According to other posters, Dell Dock works fine on Win 7, but Dell Support Center is not on the Win 7 compatibility list. The version available for download HERE is for Vista and XP only.
Hmmm. Dell Support Center came pre-installed with my Win7 ult (64bit) i7 Studio 16 XPS (1645). It has never worked.
I'll try removing it now and see what that breaks. It would be nice if (a) They stopped shipping it with new Windows 7 machines and (b) made an announcement about this - preferably someplace easy to find.
I had a Dell Support Center .dll error script popping up upon boot so I looked around and found these posts. I uninstalled Dell Support Center and was wondering why I don't need it (other than to use it as their support center access software which I never do). I am a Dell Partner and don't understand why to this late date they would install and ship DSC with Win 7 machines if it is problematic and not needed.
I did look at your link above and noticed that there is a 64 bit version for Win 7 and that under the system req tab you will notice that it actually is designed for Win 7.
I'm posting a year later with a similar problem. I bought a Dell Studio One 1909 a year ago and had Dell Support Center on it and it has worked fine until about a week ago. Actually it is working except that a message comes up every so often that says "Dell Support Center stopped working". I think it is a compatibility issue now that I've tried different settings and the Windows vista settings work best without shutting down the software except the same message keeps popping up and goes away. It can be annoying if I'm reading something & I have to wait a few seconds for it to go away but I don't know how to get rid of that message unless I uninstall the software. I happen to like the software and would like to keep it but want to get rid of the annoying problem. Any suggestions? I think it might have been a recent Windows update that caused this message to keep coming up but it was a critical update that I shouldn't remove. Thanks.
Thanks but I don't like using the restore feature unless as a last resort. I like finding a solution in case the problem comes up again. If the problem resulted because of a windows update then I have to update again after restoring which may bring the problem back.
I have just installed windows 7 (clean) on my dell inspiron 1720 and am running the support center without any problems I have done some test with it but I find it a useful tool for examing the hardware and linking to various dell support pages
