Windows 7 Easy Transfer etc.

I really hate getting windows 7 and having to learn new stuff. I still remember the shock of going from ME to XP. Alas, the new computer I will be getting will have 7. My first questions are about moving stuff from the XP computer to the 7 computer. I downloaded Easy Transfer http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/features/windows-easy-transfer.aspx and already see some confusion. It says you can use an external hard drive (I have) but after downloading it says going from one computer to another use an easy transfer cable (don't got).

Question 1  Will I be able to use the external hard drive to make this transfer from the old to the new using Easy Transfer?

It says Easy Transfer  "will copy your files and settings ". Okay, I consider "files" to be all that stuff I have in "folders". I speak of photos, music, business records etc. Is that what they mean by files? Question 2 What then are "settings" and why do I need to transfer them?

Question 3 Try to prepare me for the shock of what will no longer work. I have already heard about not being able to use Outlook Express. I remember when I went to XP the WordPad files I had made in ME would not open. I have thousands of them. I really was in a panic until I figured a way to open them somehow (can't remember how) and re-save them. Anything like this I should be prepared for?
Thanks.

    zroboy,

I have used easy transfer for upgrade from Vista to Win 7x64 same computer. Use the external HD. Don't need the cable as this connects the 2 computers together to transfer.

You are right about files. Photos, music, emails, documents as you say. Will not transfer the programs. You will need the disks to reload programs.

The seting apply to the way you have your current programs set up such as I.E or whatever access you are using to the internet.

You will have to download Windows live mail or what ever email you want to use based on what will work with Win 7. See windows site for suggestions. Not sure about your wordpad ? I suggest you use the Windows upgrade advisor on your old computer and check the compatiability of your software. Don't worry about the hardware. Have attached the advisor:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx

You also can check any other software on Win compatibility site:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx

Be sure you check all based on the bit 32 or 64 that you are going to get as you didn't say.

    Hope this helps you.
