I just bought a brand new XP Home SP2 installation CD from microsoft and I want to install it on my windows 98 computer, will the disc have everything I need to install, including the drivers? Thanks in advance.
will the disc have everything I need to install, including the drivers?
Most likely : NO.
That should be no problem, though.
You have a load of options, depending on what you want.
an option would be to clone the disk so you can return to the situation you have now.
Using Ghost or Acronis, for example.
This is always a good idea, no matter how you proceed.
If free diskspace allows it you could do a test-install so XP lives together with W98 on your disk.
( do NOT convert your filesystem to NTFS when offered as it will render W98 useless )
You now have the luxoury to see if it has all the drivers, and if not, download them or get them off the cd's that came with the hardware you assembled.
As soon as you're satisfied you have all the drivers and have verified they install and operate properly you can do a clean install (preferred !) : which means :
1. you have backed up all your data
2. you format the system disk, effectively erasing OS and all data
3. setup XP as if this were a new machine.
Alternatively, there's Microsoft's XP Upgrade Advisor.
This free piece of software will tell you whether to expect problems during upgrade or fresh install.
Just install it on W98 and see what's up.
Or you can test a fresh install on a new harddisk, so in case of problems it's really easy to just swap harddisks and you're back on W98 again.
