Ok heres the deal. I have read almost every forum and I still do not have a working computer. I have a dimension 4600 (came with video card in it). I had a not genuine version of xp pro installed on it. It worked fine, all I really did was use it as sort of a home server with my music and movie files on it. I decided to go legal and tried to install xp home back on it with the disk dell gave me. This is when windows started to freeze on the loading screen...and yes mup.sys. I have tried everything heres the list:
formated harddrive
disabled USB emulation
enabled VGA mode
unpluged everything from motherboard and took out battery for more than 20 min
formatted harddrive again (still no luck)
tried to install xp pro
back on
checked to see if hard drive works on another computer
ran dell utility and it said nothing was wrong
all cables and plugs are in well
used on board video and unplugged video card
used killdisk to wipe harddrive, format, install
If there is somthing I am missing please let me know after I have done all this I am still not able to get past the windows loading screen. Im running two hard drives but that shouldnt have anything to do with it. my bios version is AO7
mabey it is the hard drive because when I tried to boot windows on the other computer from it it froze on that one too. I have formatted the drive several times since then though.
i would try to fdisk the drive with a win 98 startup disk and delete the non dos partition and create a dos partition and fromat it. then boot the xp cd and let xp do it's thing. this has worked for me in the past.
My problem is that I do not have a floppy drive in the computer. I tried to take the harddrive out of my other computer and put it in this one. It would not boot the OS on
that harddrive.
You can't take a primary hard drive with OS from one computer and try to use it as primary hard drive in another computer, if that is what you are saying you tried. Another thought - you have two hard drives in the problem computer? A lot of people will unplug the slave drive when they want to download an operating system on the primary.
it says press f1 to contiue and f2 for setup utility
If I press f1 and the windows disc is in then it boots the windows disc. if the windows disc is not in then it says "press f1 to reboot or f2 for setup utility"
I do not know how to make a bootable cd for windows 98, only a diskette
I ran fdisk with windows disk but i cant format without the floppy so I am formatting with xp not (after creating dos partition) we'll see what happens
that didn't work either, now it is saying "required NTLDR missing" even though xp copied the windows files to the hard disk...i have no idea how to fix this computer
