Windows Freezes Periodically

I have a XPS 600:
3.0 GHz
Bios A10
2 GB RAM
USB Devices: Mouse

From time to time(it can happen after the system is up for a couple of hours or it could be up for days), the system freezes. The keyboard no longer works, however I can still move the mouse. All I can do is move the mouse, the buttons do not work. I cannot bring up task manager so my only option is to press the power button. Once I press the power button, I get control of the keyboard and mouse back, of course the system is trying to shut down, so it doesn't really help.

DEP is disabled because I was getting blue screens. I was experiencing this problem before I turned DEP off, but it wasn't as annoying/frequent as the blue screens.

I do not know what could be causing this(Hardware/Software) or how to identify software that may be causing it.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully with enough ideas, the members here can help you out. Since we do not know what you did with the computer from point A (new) to point B (now), we can still narrow it down. Is there a pattern in your usage that eventually leads to a freeze? Same game, same period of inactivity, on-line gaming, peer-to-peer communication, etc.

Also, go to Start> Run> type msinfo32.exe, click ok, and check the status of EVERY sub-item in System Summary. Let us know the results of this.

It does always happen after a period if inactivity. I doesn't happen when I am active on the computer. I do not use this computer for games or P2P programs. The computer mainly runs a financial program called Tradestation (www.tradestation.com). I reinstalled windows about a month ago, but the problem still occurs.

This sounds like a hardware problem, I hope others join in and help out here as I am not strong in this area. My first hunch would be either the video-card, motherboard, or power-supply (somewhat unlikely) would be at fault and need replacement. I'm not sure if Start> Run> dxdiag, click ok, and checking the tabs, and do the various tests will reveal anything. When you run msinfo32, do any conflicts show up when you click on the + sign by Hardware Resources and highlight Conflicts/Sharing?

Hardware specialists, help us out please!!!!!!!!!!

My last suggestion for now. I recommend you go to Dell's homepage and go through the steps for downloads in 'Support'. Enter you Service Tag # in the field rather than choosing the model # as the lists are too confusing. For your Service Tag # go to the your Start button, All Programs, Dell Accessories and click Express Service Code. When you get to the downloads and driver page, download and install the one for your BIOS. This may be well worth the try. Wish I could help more.

I have the latest BIOS according to Dell. I have the most recent driver for the NVidia Graphics Card according to Dell. The NVidia website has more recent drivers for GeForce cards, but they don't support 1680x1050 resolution for my 2005FPW Monitor. My guess would be the Graphics Card because of the threads I've read on here about NVidia.

Guess this is due to some software that is running in the background ....go to start--> run-->msconfig-->system.ini tab

and remove the programs that are not actually required (be carefull dont remove everything)

restart you pc and it must work properly

I already removed all unnecessary processes from System.ini.

I have virus software(the PC-cillin that comes with the computer)

Under Application, WinMgmt causes warnings periodically. Ther error code is 63.

A provider, OffProv11, has been registered in the WMI namespace, Root\MSAPPS11, to use the LocalSystem account. This account is privileged and the provider may cause a security violation if it does not correctly impersonate user requests.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The only error under system is for the time service and that doesn't match up with the times that the system crashed.

The time service has not been able to synchronize the system time for 49152 seconds because none of the time providers has been able to provide a usable time stamp. The system clock is unsynchronized.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

So sorry as to not being a benefit to you. If you go to Start> Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer, open Application, also System after that, you will see what errors are experienced. A freeze should cause a message here, along with the time it occured, and hopefully the problem can be determined from it. Keep in touch.

I guess I could also try getting the latest NVidia driver and finding another screen resolution, but I really like 1680x1050.

It's still strange to me that I get control back when I tap the power button. If I'm fast and lucky, I can actually save stuff before it shuts down.

I've only had the computer since March, but it could be possible.
