Windows Live OneCare
Hi Everyone,
I just reinstalled Vista Home Premium on my 531 because of all of the problems I have been having. I am now thinking of getting Windows Live OneCare 2.0. I looked into it online and saw that it is an all in one protection, Anti-Viruis, Spyware, Firewall, PC Tune Up, Back Up. I am curious if this program will beable to scan my pc for viruis and problems with the system. Is this program alright for what I want to use it for? Anything I should know before I get the program. It looks like a good deal.

- You will need to open a Live account; no big deal. The program is OK, but has limitations. It wants to do scans on a schedule, but does not allow a "don't ever scan" selection. Longest period is 1 month. Manual scans can be set for quick operation, but automatic scans test everything on all the installed drives, so can take quite a while. You can disable anything you don't want to do, such as backup. The backup is strange, because you don't really know what is being backed up (MS's choice), and you can only back up to an external drive. This is OK if you leave the external on all the time. I would rather back-up to my second internal drive; can't do it. Version 2 also supposedly simplifies networking all your computers and printers. It seemed easy, but I couldn't get it to work completely. Even though each machine saw the other and the printers, I couldn't print from my wife's wireless laptop.
Since you can usually get Live One Care on a special for $10 or so, it's worth trying it. I am not currently using it because I had to reinstall Vista because of a foolish operator error and don't have everything. It works fine on the E1705 however.

Thanks for the information. I was on Microsofts website and it looks like it protects up to three computers. Is that true?
Also, What is PC Tune-Up? What is the point of that and what does it due? I thought it searched for items wrong with my computer. Is that correct. If you can explain that to me that will be great. Thanks

However, you can not set the program to do no scheduled scans. It will run on any schedule you want except no schedule. It always seemed to want to scan when I didn't, so I usually stopped the scan and reran when I wanted it run. This is a minor inconvienience. Creating the account is a matter of your e-mail address and creating a password.

Thanks for the replies. One of the reasons why I was looking into this software was because I did see it on sale at $15 this week. How much is it to create an Windows Live account? What you are telling me the disadvantage of OneCares Viruis protection is that it only scans when ever it wants. Can I decide when I want to do a scan on my computer? Thanks

Microsoft has a new system scanner that does much of the same things a Live OneCare scan does, Live OneCare Scanner. It's free(for now?) and is available for XP or Vista. It scans for virus, spyware, system junk and registry problems. After the scan, you can select what to do with whatever it found. Seems to be OK and safe. Rinkerwolf

The PC Tune-Up I am refering to is the PC Tune-Up that the Windows Live OneCare comes with. What does it do?

Thanks, Anything I should know about before installing it? Do I have to create any account to have Windows Live OneCare?
Is the viruis protection good protection or should I still consider Norton or McAfee?
