WINDOWS ME INADEQUATE FOR SOFTWARE UPGRADES/UPDATES
After having to re install ME OS, I am unable to access my bookkeeing program. I was using QB PRO 2001 with updates. The back up I did before the problem is verified by my CPA but even with getting the updates from QB for my original software (2001) I am unable to make them compatible because they have been sent to the cpa yearly and the accountant's review I get back is updated so I must use 2004 or 2005. ME OS will not let me install either version. QB's answer was to get a new computer with a different OS.
Well, that brings me to my question - Can I install the XP Home Edition on my Dell Dimension 4100 ? what do I need to do to be sure this isn't going to be one of those now that you are at point 2, lets get some more hardware and by the way how about a differnt this or that to support what we have so far? I am already out the $270.00 for the QB Pro 2005 if I can't resolve this. From what I have been cking there aren't any other bookkeeping programs that will help me out on ME either. OR is there some way to improve on the ME to make it compatible????
:smileysad:Thank you - This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for all over the place.
This may not be the appropriate place to ask this question but I cannot get through to Verizon (guess the quake is keeping them busy) When I re installed my ME OS and had to reinstall the dsl with Verizon there seemed to be a problem with the CD that was issued when we installed the DSL. Apparently it is like everything else and has re releases so mine isn't quite up to par and made some big problems on the re installation.Still don't have the help and support tool downloaded.
Forgive me if this isn't where I should be asking about how to handle this. I would just install the old one and use the support tool to get it fixed but that one is out of the question. I am trying to get things done in advance that I wished I had been able to do when I had to do the reinstall of ME.
ok - I have gone through the informaton that you gave me, printed and used the upgrade advisor. it says that my disc detector program that is in my control panel will not work after the upgrade to XP. I have tried to access that information so I can make a copy of it.
When I do a search it says that it is CD Drive D:Well, that doesn't help with anything. Is there anything else thatIshould be searching for that would help me find this?
I hope this is ok to post here. It is a continuation of the same problem. When I resolve this challenge I believe I will be ready to go.
I have requested an update on my Verizon dsl with MSN and should be able to continue with any online help when it is installed AND the bookkeeping program requires it.
Since everything was installed on the computer when we got it, I am not sure, exactly ,what to expect from the XP after it is installed.
It is proper to continue the thread since you are dealing with the same issue. I am not familiar with Disk Detector but if you have a Creative sound card the information under "Creative Service for CDROM Access" on
this page may apply. It may not be a major issue.
I have another question- the software package for the XP OS that I purchased (haven't opened it yet) says upgrade on it. Is this an indication that it is merely a version that will upgrade XP systems that are already installed on one's computer or is it indicating that it is a later upgraded version? Sorry to be so ignorant.
I got my magnifying glass out to see if there were any instructions on the package that woud indicate any other supplies that I would need to have on hand and noticed that.
An XP Upgrade CD can be used to upgrade any Microsoft operating system from Windows 98 on. It is strongly recommended that a clean install be done rather than upgrading over an existing operating system, as upgrades often result in problems that eventually require a clean install anyway. If you use the Upgrade CD to start the installation you will be prompted to insert the CD of a qualifying operating system early on to verify that you are doing a legitimate upgrade after which XP will be installed. Keep your ME CD because should you ever need to reinstall XP you will need to insert it again.
Something happened while I was posting my last plea for more help. lost sever.
I was all ready to do the installation of the XP OS.
Something happened or rather didn't happen with the BIOS upgrade. The A: won't recognize it. I thought I would try to put the XP CD in the CD drive and try it but nothing but the old ME comes up business as usual.
Everything was unplugged and I was ready to go.
Before I send this thing sailing to the parking lot, can you please make a better suggestion??
Do you think there are so many thngs wrong with the re installation of the ME OS that I should try to do it again and then go with this XP? The A drive has always been a problem and perhaps a re installation of the ME could fix that? I just don't know what else to try to get this switched. I've made copies of EVERYTHING and gone over all the steps so many times, I just don's know what I missed.
I even tried the little blurb in the XP packaging that said to go to the se up page to try to get the cd dive to boot to it.
Is it possible there is something wrong with the CD??
To bypass the problem with the A drive and the diskettes not being able to be formatted or read, i went back to the downloads and downloaded as though I do not have a floppy disk drive.
When i tried to execute that it said it could not proceed as there are installed memory managers. Foiled again.!!
I'm sure you know what that means and how I can do something to it.

You asked, "Can I install the XP Home Edition on my Dell Dimension 4100?"
Yes, you can. The items you must consider before making that move are summarized here.
