are these two security systems compatible with each other when they are running together as i am having so much trouble connecting to the net and the speed of the laptop is very slow, when i select shutdown it takes an age to do so, is this normal?,new to all this so any help would be great.
My experience (E1505 with Vista Home Premium upgrade) is that McAfee is slow. I've uninstalled the suite and only put back on the anti-virus. But it is a long reboot as McAfee decides to do whatever it does do. I don't have an issues connecting to the net though after McAfee lets my wireless setup loose to connect. I'm going to ditch it for a more permanent solution--will report.
If you are using McAfee (firewall, anti-virus, antispy etc), I think you'd either want the McAfee firewall running or the Windows firewall running....but not both. I'm told that two antispy programs are OK together but only one anti-virus and one firewall. Windows Vista does not have a built-in antivirus function so one needs to have some anti-virus program outside of Vista.
Maybe someone more experienced can jump in here. Good luck.

cheers.
McAfee and Nortons as well are resourse hogs and many of us try to avoid them if possible. Numerous free anti virus and firewall software available such a AVG for the anti virus and Zone Alarm for the firewall.
Video card. X1400 not that good
Spyware will slow things down, so you can run two different spyware programs to cover most of the nasty spyware out there.
If you hard drive is not defraged or is full or near full this will slow it down
Bloatware on the system. Dell is known to put some garbbage on the system that is not needed or wanted which slows it down a bit. You can uninstall those from Add/Remove program.
Gaming. The X1400 is not a barn burner and you are some what stuck with this.
If you are hooked up to a printer, some printer drivers will slow the process of the system turning off.
Stop Unnecessary Startup programs
Below procedure will provide a faster boot up, and eliminate wasting memory on programs that are not in use at this time, and may help gaming……
Start Up Programs: Click on START, Click on Run, than put in the box MSCONFIG Click OK. Now you are in the System Configuration Utility Program. Click on START UP you see on the top of this Utility Program. Uncheck the programs from here that you do not want to start at boot up, leaving the anti virus and any third party firewall alone. You can always go back into this program to restart them. They will not be uninstalled. Click on APPLY, than it will ask you if you wish to reboot the system. Do so. After it boots up again, you will be presented with another window from the System Configuration Utility Program telling you that you have made an adjustment. If you don't want to see this pop up each time you boot up, put a check mark in the little box in the lower left corner of this announcement.
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php Link to a site that can explain what you have starting up, if you do not already know, and which ones you can safely un-check. It’s a long list. Or you can Google Search for what is showing in the Msconfig program, and see what it is...
Yeah thanks that what i thought but when i try and disable the windows firewall it wont let me go on the net at all.It comes up with a driver and filter issue(cant remember exactly).really getting p;d off now.might just put it all back in the box and send it back, dell support over the phone is terrible(my experience anyway)
Many of use do ourselves a favor by doing a complete reformat, and reinstall of windows and put it back on with what we want, not what Dell wants. This cleans the system of all that rotten code and it seems faster for most of us by doing so. Might want to give it a try.
but how the do i do any of that?,thanks for the advice though.what would happen if i got rid of mcaffee, would windows still protect my laptop to a good enough level?any advice would be great.
