XP clean install SATA BSOD
I'm trying to do a fresh install of windows xp 64bit sp3. But I keep getting the BSOD
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C5A524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000 blaah blaah blaaaaah)
This occurs just as the install is about to offer which Hard Drive to install the OS on....right after all the drivers load up and it says its starting windows.
I bought a new WD Carver Black 500gig HDD for this occasion, and I'm hoping to eventually dual boot with Vista 64bit but I have to get passed this issue first.
The motherboard is running the latest bios A06 on an XPS 720, 4gb ram, sli nvidia 8600GTS x2, SB audio, the basic xps720 stuff.
My original HDD is working fine. I disabled it in bios in slot sata 0. The WD HDD is in slot sata 2 (does this matter?) Bios and windows recognizes the HDD. I have it split up into 3 partitions, the first one being primary/active and bootable (Partition magic and Acronis Disk Director say so)
One curious aspect is that I can get passed the BSOD if I use any OS thats imaged on a cd-rom. But any OS I try to install that's imaged on a dvd-rom doesn't work!!
The most common solution I find on the net is to slipstream the sata drivers with nlite. Which I have done successfully with the OS versions on cd-rom, (xp home and pro.. I'm using legal copies btw!!) But like I said before, if its on a dvd, it ain't workin :o(
I don't have a floppy drive for the F6 setup sequence! I have tried using 3 different dvd-rom drives. 2 sata and 1 ide with no luck. I've pulled one of the memory sticks so that its only 2gb not 4..no luck. I'm pretty much at a dead end. I think I've tried everything except pulling the extra pci peripherals (second vid card and SB sound card) Now I have a stack of bootable OS dvd's sitting on my desk. So now I'm looking for some help.
Is the above issue a known one?
Is there any way around it?

Hello skarzz, You seem to be having a problem with the XP install needing the chipset drivers installed before the hard drives can be recogonized.
If you do not have a floppy drive with the drivers on a floppy disk, the drivers will have to be slipstreamed into the XP disk.
Ths drivers will need to be install using the F6 key very early in the install process or the hard drives will not be recogonized.
The reason they are when you use the image is they have been installed and the image has them in it.

Download the smaller of the SATA drivers for your system from the Drivers and download page. Once downloaded run the file to extract the files. Slipstream them into the install disk.
Also it is always best to list your system model and hardware specs when you post. Helps us find drivers and such for you.
Also once you do get the os installed you need to follow the steps HERE on reloading drivers and system software.

The link you provided seems to do exactly what slipstreaming does, but more complicated. Am I wrong here. Can you give me a little more detail as to what your problem was and why this fixed it?

On one of my many attempts to slipstream the correct drivers on a bootable dvd, I remember adding additional drivers along with the sata drivers. Im positive the chipset drivers where included into the slipstream.

Unfortunetly I dont have an option to change the sata mode in my bios. The only option I have under the sata drives it to enable RAID which doesn't apply to my settings.
I've been to the dell support site to download my sata driver already. Like I said, I was successful slipstreaming the correct driver on a bootable CD, but the same driver didnt work when slipsteamed on a DVD :o(
Also, I thought my description of my pc in my original post was enough to get by. XPS720, 4gig ram, sli nvidia 8600GTS x2, SB audio, the basic xps720 stuff. What else would you suggest I list to help expedite my issue? Since I didnt build this unit, I really have no idea what model MB I have other than its nvidia sli something! :o(
I dont want anyone to think I'm not appreciative for their help. After reading through my replies, I might have come off as a know-it-all..which I'm totally not.. far from it. Its just that I've tried most of the suggestions already with no luck. But let me be clear right now... I am very thankful for the suggestions everyone has give so far. You guys took the time to reply to my post which you didnt have to do. So thank you very much for helping me out. You guys are great.
I will try again to load the chipset driver along with the sata driver one more time...then I'll give JohnFox's link a try! Wish me luck.

I would put the new harddrive in SATA slot 0 to do the install.
