Xp Home Crashed

I installed Norton SystemWorks 2005 Premier on my wife's Dimension 2400 and caused all kinds of problems. On my 5th removal of norton and cleanup the computer would not boot. BSOD with a ntldr error. Norton suggested I do a repair install of Xp. The computer would boot to cd, begin setting up and then go to a blue screen error ntdll.dll error. Cannot get past this. Using the technicians suggestions, I fdisked and reformatted the hard drive and do a clean install. The install cd results in the same error. Replaced the hard drive with a brand new Maxtor from Dell. Boot up or boot to cd has identical results to old hard drive.

Follow Denny's Reinstall guide. Read carefully and he'll explain how to ensure a clean installation:

Here are the documents for your reinstall guide for easy reference:

The most important thing is to boot to the Windows XP disc using the UPPER CD or DVD drive, in case you have two drives.

Osprey, the problem I have is that the Xp cd for the 2400 will not boot but gives a blue screen error. I can't get to the setup page to select any options. I have messed with this for a week and studied everything I could find but nothing works. I am beginning to believe that the installation cd is corrupted in some way.

Do you only have one optical drive?

If you are getting a blue screen error, it leads me to believe your XP disc is not booting. If your master CD device is not working properly, you could try unplugging it and plugging the other drive into the end IDE connector, then try to boot to the XP disc again.

Sorry for all the back and forth. I know this must be frustrating for you.

Try this. In system setup, in Boot Sequence, put the CD drive first (may be listed as ATAPI), then remove all other entries. This will ensure that if the CD does not boot, the computer will not proceed to try to load XP.

Make sure all peripherals, like USB devices, printer, etc. are disconnected (I'm sure you've already done that, just checking).

Then pop your XP disc in, exit saving changes and allow the system to boot.

Osprey, problem solved - Dell replaced the XP CD and it works just fine. Thank you for all your help!
