XP install problem - Inspiron 8000

I replaced the HDD in my Inspiron 8000 and have been trying to install Win XP - without much success.  I have followed the instructions that Dell provides concerning Win XP installation on the 8000, i.e., partition the HDD, format for NTSF, install XP.

When I boot the 8000 (after the installation), the PC hangs at the blue "welcome" screen or sometimes it gets to the Desktop and then hangs.  I have to power off and re-boot MANY times before it will boot up properly and work.

I can boot into SAFE mode and things work fine.  I can shut down and SOMETIMES re-boot normally and things work OK - but most of the time it doesn't.

If I boot into SAFE mode and select the "VGA mode", the system will hang just like it does during a normal boot.  I figured that I had a video driver problem so I loaded the latest video driver for my system.  I still have the same problem.

I have the latest BIOS.

I am pulling out my hair.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

    Hi,

Well it looks like a driver error of some kind.

Go here and look for errors
    1. Right click My Computer / Properties / Hardware / Device Manager.
    Look for "Yellow" errors

    2. Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance / Admin Tools / Event Viewer / System.
Look for "Red" errors. Double click on error.

If there are a lot, some of them will be duplicates so just post one of each.
Take a note of the Event ID and also the Source and post them back.

There were no "yellow" alerts in the Hardware Device Manager.  Here is the consolidated list of "red" errors in the Event Viewer.

Hope you can help me!  Thanks.

    Hmm...

I thought something might have shown up in one of these.
The errors do not look too bad to me.  Most of them are not serious and not the cause of your problem.

The only possibility I can see there is the printer.
Did you add a printer or update the driver?

Or did you just install SP2?

Did you install all the drivers from the Drivers and Utilities CD after installing XP?

Try removing all peripherals and see what happens.

I was having the problem BEFORE I installed the printer.

I was having the problem BEFORE I updated Win XP and AFTER I installed the latest updates.

I installed all of the drivers in the proper order.

This thing has really got me stumped.  I wonder if it might be a hardware problem?  I have NOT tried 98 or Me.

    Go to

    Start/Run
    msconfig

In the Boot.ini tab, check "/SOS" in the Boot Options section.

Then you should get a list of drivers, etc. as they load up and you can see where Windows is hanging

I did as you suggested but I'm not sure what is happening.  When I boot up I get the black C:> DOS screen and the files fly past and the screen disappears so I can't tell what is happening.  Is there a way to accept or decline a file before it loads like Win 98 would let you do?

    Thanks again for your help.
