XP Repair issue

Following guidance from Dell, attempting to try anything to make my Dimension 4550 reboot to Windows following blue screen dump, I rebooted and loaded the Win XP Reinstall CD and changed the Boot Sequence using F12 to load from the CD drive.

Got the next command to "Hit any key " and then got back the message "System Setup checking system hardware."

Then nothing but a black screen and a whiring drive.  Several minutes worth.

What is up?

What was the Stop Code message?  The stop code message is a 0x00000000 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) format.

This is a Microsoft diagnostic indicator of what caused the system to crash, not something to lightly skip over without properly recording down.

If it is not loading up to even the windows reinstall cd, make sure that the hard drive is good.

Turn on the system and hit F12, you should see Hard drive diagnostics.  See if it returns an error code for the hard drive.

Similar problem please? Following the blue screen of death; when I tried to reboot got the dos message "windows\system32\config.sys (or something like that, obviously I'm not at that machine right now) so I went into BIOS and changed to boot from the CD-ROM. No problems up to where I've tried to do the "repair" - says I have no hard drive installed? Ran the diagnositics CD that came with my 8400 (WinXP Professional) and all the hardware, including the harddive (single partion "C") checks out fine.  What should I/do I have to do in order to make the winxp disk recognize my harddrive? (Model was purchased after July 2004 so I may have some other magical restore options I don't know about). Thanks!

Ran the hard disk diagnostics (90-90) but right off it said "Failed, could not access hard drive"
Dell says Hard drive is bad order.

Any way to get data back, a magic solution?

You could try putting it in another system to see if you can copy files . . usually works best f you connect to the secondary controller ( where the CD is)

on the data backup, the slaving to a secondary port would be pretty much the easiest way.  There a few software packages that try to fix the drive, and then there is always the drive saver companies that will try to recover all data off the drive.

Dell customers can get discounts from three of them, this info can be found:

    QuillianSW ,

a missing or corrupt  \SYSTEM32\CONFIG is saying that the System registry file is missing or corrupt.  The resolution isn't too easy, outside of booting into Advanced Options and running Last Known Good Configuration, Microsoft has a long drawn out process for Windows XP that, as long as you have had the system restore tool running, will allow you to revert back to a previos registry file.

Its not the easiest or most fun thing in the world to do though.
