OK, let me see  if I can better explain the sequence of events here.

I was reading an article on Windows-Help.NET about version 5 of Windows Update and I did not consider beforehand what would happen when I clicked on the 'Public Preview' link.

Cause what happened was it installed version 5. Then once it was installed I changed the setting to manual and started looking around. When I saw that it wanted to install SP2 I clicked no and closed the window.

About 30 minutes later XP opened a balloon window stateing that updates were ready for download. I meant to close the window but clicked in it instead starting the download!

On a DSL connection the download took about 20 minutes and the subsequent install around 1 hour and 40 minutes. The re-boot was where the process hung.

This morning I re-booted and the pc started just fine. SP2 is installed and everything looks like it's working. So far.

Well after several failed reboots, finding that I could not access my external harddrive and a lot of small odd things happening: I uninstalled SP2.

So far everything seems back to normal, although I did get a message from MSN Messenger stating that it was going to have to repair itself. But it seems to be working ok.

More if I find out anything.

 

 

this is exactly why I am hesitant to download sp2 as I have a feeling that 99% of SP1 users will have major headaches.

Isn't XP SP2 will only release by sometime next month??
We only using SP1 currently...

SP-2 RC-2  version 2162 beta is out now for those that like to try things out.  I have the sp-2 rc-2 running on my computer for the last few weeks and everything is just fine, no problems.  SP-2 final will be released in the next two to three weeks.

It takes toooooooo long. I installed it and my system became so slow I uninstalled it. In addition it deleted some of my loaded software. The uninstall took 2-3 hours. What a waste of time.

That's why I told you guys out there it's not even ready yet in my last month post. The 266MB pre-release specially for NT-pro IT only. Thus, it will killing you and your system to download such a big size. But for your infor, SP2 has just released last week(August 25th) for home and personal user officially. It's about 72MB of size and it will download and install smoothly. Just follow what it ask and you'll be safe. I had it download and it works pretty good on my system except my personal Firewall had a conflic with this SP2, I unistalled the Firewall and now my system run like a new machine! New SP2 has its own enhanced Firewall and security system, so I think it should be good enough for my protection at the moment.

So, guys and girls.. go and download the newly released SP2 and get the one for home/personal user only... forget the big 266mb. Rushing will only kill you in the end !

SP2's firewall still only protects you from things trying to get in not from things already on your system trying to get out. So I'll just hold on to my Zonealarm for awhile to prevent just such an occurence from taking place. I also want to see what other software has problems before I install so I am reseaching the websites of all the companies I have software from to determine if there will be a problem or not. Some of them say that they are still testing, so I'll wait for now.

I just tried installing Windows XP SP2 update and it failed 3 times. I'm wondering if this is not a blessing in disguise. I received error code 80072EFD and couldn't find reference to it on Microsoft's troubleshooter website. I never had problems with updates before. I'm interested to hear about the experiences of others with this update. I've not seen too many positive comments in other forums.
