Hibernation problem

My XPS often cannot be restarted after hibernation. I must press the power numerous time until I see a keyboard flash. The premium support staff don't know what to do. It's frustrating. Please make suggestions.

Here is more information in response to a private message.

The problem first arose two weeks ago. The first premium support person said it was static electricity. Later another premium support person said it was caused by a windows update. Still later another support person said that the OS must be reinstalled.

The OS had been reinstalled approximately a month ago to solve intermittent failures to connect to a Dell external monitor using an HDMI cable. This action was a surprise to me. As a consequence, my backup was inadequate. I didn't understand how to do it correctly and I may have done the recovery improperly.

The problem with the OS reinstall idea is that there is no expectation that this extremely disruptive process will solve the problem. The support staff certainly don't know the cause of the problem.

I have become accustomed to a procedure. I hold the power button down until I see a flash of light from keyboard keys. Then I repeat the process over and over. Finally, all flash together. Then it recovers from hibernation.

I have noticed that my Dell work computer enters hibernation gradually. After a few seconds the power switch light ceases. In contrast, this XPS computer seems to enter hibernation abruptly. Later I see the white and yellow lights flashing for long periods of time. In some cases, there is a long delay before I see the white/yellow sequence of lights.

Given that the Dell staff don't know the cause of the problem, the reinstall may not solve the problem.

I became curious about active internet sites during the hibernation attempt. These sites include dropbox, onedrive and gdrive. To test this idea, I put the computer into airplane mode prior to hibernation.

I discovered that the use of airplane mode eliminates the hibernation problem. I've done many tests during the last few days.

I think my observation is an important clue about the cause of the problem.
