Two days ago I accidentally spilled some water on my XPS 13 7390, which is just over a year old. Since it is out of warranty, I took it to a 3rd party repair shop, who said that the damage was only to the screen. However, they said that the whole upper half of the laptop would need to be replaced, and that assembly is not available for purchase from Dell. I contacted the Dell customer support center, who also said that nether the exact part nor any compatible replacements were not in stock. It seems like my last option is to send in my laptop for a diagnosis at the Dell repair center. However, wouldn't they also not be able to procure the necessary parts, and run into the same problem? I just want to avoid shipping in my laptop and spending $60 to find out that I still have the same issue.
If there is any damage to the mainboard, though -- replacing both it and the screen may result in an unacceptable cost vs. replacing the entire system. I'm not sure how they determined only the screen was bad, but you may want to consider that possibility before ordering a relatively expensive screen, only to find an even more expensive mainboard is also needed.
A few updates - the mainboard, CPU, RAM, all still seems to be working fine. And miraculously, the screen has actually started working flawlessly again. All I can think of was that were was some residual water left inside that is now gone. At this point, the only problems with the laptop are: there are still some visible water stain marks inside the LCD, and the built-in camera does not work at all.
I did go ahead and order the express diagnostic service from Dell, and am planning to ship it in to have it all checked out. However, if they do in fact need to replace the whole upper assembly, that might be cost prohibitive for the current loss of functionality. I agree that if I need to replace both halves, it makes more sense just to buy a new laptop. But to replace the whole upper assembly now just to eliminate the water stains and get a new camera (when I can buy an external one) doesn't make sense.
I'll post again when I hear back from Dell, in case this is helpful to anyone in the future.
Would the warranty have covered accidental water damage? My understanding is no.
And I would hope that the replacement upper assembly is only $200! My laptop is speced with a UHD screen, and I've heard that these can run much higher.
This is all assuming that the repair depot does have the correct replacement part in stock. I called Dell customer support again yesterday, and they told me it is most likely available to the repair department, but not directly to customers.
Resolution: UHD, but I can't find any more specific details. Is there anything else I need to look up?
Touch: yes
I'm still most likely planning to send in the laptop to Dell service, just to make sure that there are no other issues with it, and hopefully they have the replacement part too.
Thank you very much for finding this part! If I hear from Dell that they either don't have the part in stock or it will cost significantly more than this, I will go ahead and order it from Parts People.
