X51 R3, Repeatedly Freezing
Freezes either during boot or 5mins after boot. I initially thought it had something to do with my HDD however upon running a diagnosis I received this:
PCIe - Training error PCI tag-0100 VendorID-10DE DivideID-1401 SVid-10DE SDid-1138 Bus 01: Link Degraded, maxWidth x16, negWidth x2, Slot 1
I'm not sure what to make of this error, my best guess is that one of my PCIe slots are shot and my main concern with that is that repairs may be costly. If that is the case how and what do I replace and will it just be smarter to buy a new pc all together for gaming.
My assumptions could also be completely wrong, happy to hear any words of advice/help that you could offer.

If you remove both video card and hdd, does it POST smoothly and tell you “no boot device”?
when you say it freezes during boot, which step during boot does it get stuck on? Do you see a dell logo and it gets stuck there? is there a progress bar or spinning wheel on the Dell logo screen that does not complete?

sounds like the GPU card is not working right. X16 IS IT. the CLUE. GTX980?
overheating,?
try running with no GPU CARD and use local iGPU.
if that works, clean the GPU card with air , (can-o-air) sold at walmart.
blow out all that nasty lint in the GPU heat sinks. and fans,
blow out the slot i the X16 slot so it is clean. then reset this card.
do all that with NO AC applied, this way. see how servicing ,1,2,3,4,5,here.
This PC is way too small for such heat loading and some have water cooling , keeping this PC cool so small
takes extra work, and keeping it clean, if this work scares you as any PC shop to fix it. or diagnose it.
All vents , all fans and all heatsinks must be kept clean of lent build up.
read reviews on this PC, it loves to overheat , costs too much , costs too much to upgrade if at all.
Next time buy a full size PC ATX build on that and have endless options on upgraded, never this THING.
