www.linux-on-laptops.com is a great resource. I'm using a Latitude C400, the only major stumbling block was the video chipset. It uses an Intel i830 which uses a block from main memory. The Dell BIOS doesn't allow you to set how much, it's hard coded to 1 MB (so you couldn't get 1024x768 at 24 bpp). I did once see a link to a driver on Intels web site, but recent versions of X and the kernel contain patches that fix it. I think the other things to look out for are the modem and the wireless chipset, where applicable.

8000-series laptops usually work beautifully under Linux. My 8200 runs RH7.3 like a charm. :)

Installing linux on a latptop only has one thing in common with installing on a desktop... putting the cd in the drive. Laptops are a bit of a pain, and you relly have to do your homework.
I got my i8500 running slackware wonderfully. But it took me about a month to get it exactley how I wanted it.

Ok, I think I'm going to go for the i8500. Linux-on-laptops had several pages on it. Looks like I should be able to get everything to work, but have to put some work into it.....

well most laptops will install linux ok, but all might not work.

if u can get a laptop with nvidia graphics, they provide possible the best support for video cards. And TV out works with out a hassel.

But in general IBM generally keep linux in mind with there hardware and as far as i know linux works on there hole line of laptops, desktops servers and mainframes.
