Alienware Issues
Had my M15X for a couple of weeks now and its pretty buggy. I had a blue screen followed by not letting me boot into windows, it did let me boot into safe mode though but wouldn't let me install anything. I found a fix for the windows installer and this seemed to fix everything. But then it happened on two more different occasions. I was able to install the latest driver but I am currently trying to download the files targeted in this post
http://en.community.dell.com/owners-club/alienware/f/3746/t/19349264.aspx
but neither of them appear to be working. When I try to download I get different file sizes each time, only once did it download a file that windows recognized as an exe but it was not the same file size as what is advertised on the download page so I did not try it. I know its these files because I can download other drivers for diff computers fine off of dells website. Any advice here. Do you think that this vbios will solve my issues.
A couple of other issues I am having is that when I turn on the computer half of the keyboard is dark until I log into my profile, is this normal? Also for some reason all colors seem to morph fine but when morphing into red it looks like a very slow choppy strobe light. It doesn't smoothly fade in and out. Is this normal also?
LastlyIm using chrome and for some reason I cant click on the preferences button, the little wrnch looking thing. Im thinking this has something to do with the theme because ive never had this problem before.

Chrome and firefox were both doing it, and from multiple computers/networks. Its working now though so not sure what was going on. Very strange though because it acted like it downloaded it all. Ran the vbios update and seemed like its working. Since its been so intermittent I guess i will let you know if I get that error again. Any input on the other issues?
O.k. well this didn't help at all. I'm still getting the same issues. Some games will randomly freeze. Sometimes I can't get past Windows is starting page. Sometimes I am getting blue screens. Sometimes when i turn the computer off and unplug the power cord my alien heads stay lit up. A lot of times my frame rates drop much lower than they should be (some times putting into stealth mode fixes this but that is a stupid solution.) Every time I start the computer up the keyboard lights are messed up (although they normally fix themselves after I log in.) Alienware theme for windows 7 messes up my boxes and apparently isn't compatible with chrome (as I can't get to my preferences page so i cant get to downloads or history or settings or plugins.)
I guess the point I'm trying to make is the fact that I spent a lot of money on a superior machine and I am not even getting average working performance out of it. My company buys dell computers and I have never had problems to this extent with any other machine. I understand that there are premium parts and a lot of issues can arise from having high end components, but this just seems more like being lazy or poor workmanship. I also understand that majority of people who purchase these machines are going to have some experience with tinkering around with computers but I don't think this justifies the amount that I have had to do and from what it seems in this forum the amount that others have to do. To me it would be like buying a fully loaded Cadillac and then having to either be a mechanic or call the car company just to get it running normally.
So anyways I am done ranting for now. What can I do that I haven't already to try fixing some of these issues.

Have you tried removing and reinstalling the Command Center? That seems to fix alot of issues.

Yea so that didnt do anything either. Today I am having the issue where it shows the windows loading screen and then I just get a black screen afterwards instead of going to the logon screen. This is very frustrating.
restart the computer tap the f8 key until you see the advanced boot options menu. choose last known good configuration (advanced). if continue to get a black screen repeat the process and this time choose enable low-resolution video (640x480).
It doesn't stay a black screen. It wont work for like 20 or 30 minutes (unless i go into safe mode). It happens all the time now. Last night it froze and crashed about 6 times with the same delay between. Also for some reason if I am playing a higher graphics game and I go away (like to the bathroom) its frozen about 40% of the time when I come back. I am starting to really regret buying this computer. Are there any other m15X owners with the 5850 that have similar problems?
Sounds like some pretty random issues. Try loading this on and see what it says about your HDD (Since it wasn't saving files properly).

Also run a memory check to make sure your RAM is OK. The link bellow will tell you how to do that.
Also try running a full scan disk on your drive (assuming its not an SSD). Be sure to check both options for "Automatically fix files system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". This will help if some of your system files are corrupt due to bad sectors and are causing system crashes.

As for drivers, I use 10.07 right from the ATI's website and have not had issues. Can't garentee the latest ones will be as good though.

Try another browser and see if you get the same download results.
