my X51 Xperience
I just got my very first Alienware product, an X51 and out of the box it restarts whenever it has to display 3D on most of the apps/games i tried on. Non-gaming use its fine, so far it did not let me play any game yet-- that for a gaming pc
3D apps that i tried so far..the can kill my X51
1. Alienware's very own PC check video card test , the "Short Video Test"
2. Skyrim
3. Mass Effect
4. L.A Noire
5. Shogun Total War
6. Uniengine Heaven Demo
What happens is a bit of the 3D will load and after few seconds.. than after that the pc will restart..
It's is not the common issue of the power cables getting caught up in the video card fan.. i checked already that.. and the fan is working fine.
I tried different graphics drivers from dell's supplied in the resource cd.. dell latest update in the website.. nvidia's latest driver and nvidia's beta, all exhibit the same issue
Reinstalled the OS, installed the dell supplied video driver.. same thing
I have a case opened with dell and they are going to send down the tech to replace the video card.. unfortunately the part is not available and i was told to wait for 3-4 days.. this for a next business day premium support
So there goes my first alienware xperience, cannot even do 3D games..and wha'ts worst even alienware's very own video test application.. i wonder what sort of quality tests the unit goes through before being released..
so disappointed for such an expensive and brand new item.. i used to build my own pc before this and i never had issues like this... oh hell

I woud exercise your return policy rights before they expire.
If you do not want to return the item, then you will have to make allowances.
I really want to return this item now... or have them replace with new(working) one
I bought this item from an authorized retailer in Singapore. The next day, i already brought the item back to the store asking replacement because of the issue and i was advised to contact dell for warranty claims or repairs.. that even though i explained it didn't work out of the box..
When i contacted they dell, they opened a case and the waiting game started
I am not really liking how my dell story is developing.. case history below
Mar 10, acquired the X51, out of the box, restarts 1-2 seconds after a 3D i load a 3rd app/game
-it restarts even on the alienware's own simple graphics card test
-updated drivers, reinstalled os,check video card cable issue..still no good..i spent a good whole day reading all sorts of X51 issues and fix
-did a final fresh install if OS.. loaded with dell to nvida drivers.. still no good
-tried the onboard video card using HDMI, there is no issues, all 3rd works and no restart
Mar 11,opened a case and did on the phone troubleshooting, tech advised to send a dispact with replacement video card
Mar 12,part not available, advised to wait for 3-4 days for the part
Mar 13,advised to wait for next week (March 20)
Mar 19,advised to wait until Mar 30 which is not acceptable to for a product with issues since day 1,demanded other alternative as i cannot wait for so long, i was advised to be called the next day
Mar 20, was advised that they cancelled my previous case and they will send a tech without the video card to check for the "cable issue"(which is not my case in the first place)
- the outsourced tech company called to sched an appointment during my working hour, i was told the they only dispatch during office hours. I am working and i dont want to file a leave for this, just to "check my pc" and they dont even have parts to test.
So im still here still using my old pc..i havent used my X51 other than to see it restarting on my 3D games..
Why do i have to suffer like this..i got a lemon and still have to suffer to get my issue resolved..Anybody can help me on this? any advise? Is very strange, I live in South China and like you we can just buy them from retailers store, I ask my retailer if they have many in stock and they answered no problem if you want one it will take 15 minutes.
Here in China they say the return policy is only valid 7 days and I ask them if i can just try it and if not like it they say just come back to the store before 7 days and we will refund your money
I assume Singapore must be pretty much the same as China my 2 cents
Any way just send it back inmidiatly and if you really want one just go to another retail store and buy one again
Hi morblore, i checked before, mine is the 330W power brick.
Today they have me file leave from work just to attend to thier technician dispatch to have a look at my problem..
there is no part dispatched to test, all the best this tech can do is to reinstall the OS and driver which i told them i have done already. I also checked issue of the popular video card cable stuck in the video card fan... not the case with mine.
I will update the outcome.
Hi solrac, thanks for your response. your return policy there is too good to be true, maybe won't be the same if you are actually trying to return one
Actually, Singapore just passed what they call a "lemon law" to take effect in September this year. Let's see how dell can do business with this law.
Anyways, it's not the case here. I already tried, the retailer points to dell for any issue, and dell can spend forever trying to repair the issue. Actually, dell as a flyer like this saying something about their warranty
itfairsg.com/.../dell-warranty-and-technical-support-procedure-price-list-flyer-brochure-5632
And i reviewed the terms and conditions for dell products in my country, it's all to the customers disadvantage and there is nothing you can do about it, to the point of just blaming yourself of buying a dell product.

I managed to borrow an HDMI cable to test the onboard graphics card..tested just now
the onboard video actually can do the 3D stuff on what would already kill my X51's GTX555
i tested with PC check video card test and Skyrim.. both are running fine, no restarts
so most probably i got a bad video card out of the box and as we know, the replacement parts are not brand new.. **just breaks my heart
