Big Problems?????
Hello All,
I think I have a serious problem with my old computer.
Dell Dimension 4700
Windows XP SP2
2 gigs Ram
EVGA 7600GT
My wife uses this pc for email, MySpace and pictures... simple stuff...I hardly ever use this computer... only to update the spyware and virus tools..
Anyway, yesterday when I woke up I walked out into the kitchen and heard a loud fan running. I walked over to where the computer is and it sounded like it was going to blow up. I tried to move the mouse to get the screen to come up so I could shut it down.... nothing...
I then shut the computer down using the power button. I opened the case and it was like an oven in there.
The hard drives were hot to touch. I let the computer cool for a long time and tried to turn it on, that's when the blinking amber light starts.. and nothing else.....
So my question is.. What is fried?
any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Flu

I thought it was the power supply so I bought a new one. Now the computer will turn on but no picture.
When I power it up it comes on and beeps twice.
Then the diagnostic lights on the back are as followed. AB and C are green and D is amber.
Is this bad?????????????
Thanks

GGGY indicates 'Another Failure'.
See here.
Check that all the power and data cables are properly connected to the motherboard and drives, try removing and reseating the video card.
Is the power button LED, Solid Green?

I checked the cables and I tried reseating the Video card. Yes, the power button is solid green.
One thing though. I looked around the forum and noticed some of your advice about putting a new psu in a 4700. You always said it needed 2 SATA connecters.
I bought this one at my local Staples.
http://www.provantage.com/antec-bp350~7ANTS02M.htm
it said SATA connectors on the box, but only had one.
It hooked up fine though.. I'm just trying anything....
Thanks

The power supply here seems fine for the 4700.
SATA power connectors are for the [2] SATA hard drives, the optical drives use 4-pin Molex connectors.
Try clearing the clearing the NVRAM.
See here for the directions for clearing the NVRAM
I would suggest trying a different video card, but this is usually indicated by the diagnostic lights, but may worth checking out, you could also, try a different monitor.

I tried clearing the NVRAM with no progress. Then I thought I would take your advice and look at the monitor and video card. The monitor is fine I hooked it up to my XPS 420 and it worked. So then I looked at the video card and it had about 75% of the tubes on it blown.
So the power supply and video card went out at the same time. What the heck causes that???
Well I just wanted to say thanks for all of your help.....
Thanks again,
Flu

The Dimension 4700's have a design flaw that Dell will not acknowledge to this day! Check your case fan to see if it is blowing air into, or out of the tower case? By your previous description of it being as hot as an oven, I'd say it's blowing air into the case...if it is blowing air into the case with no vent for the hot air to escape, this causes heat generation and eventual failure of the hardware inside the case. Let me know what your particular configuration is and I'll give you some advice to remedy the problem?
