dimension 8400, memory card problems
The motherboard was replaced when the computer was new (connection problems with dsl). It was replaced with an E120882 motherboard.
The problem is that when we install the second memory card, we get the blue screen of death. This system requires 2 memory cards (there are 4 slots). I have tried installing the cards in the two white tabbed slots, the two black tabbed slots, and one in each. It seems to work fine with only one installed in the 1st slot even though the instructions say these should be installed in pairs. Do you have a suggestion. Could it be a bad slot on the motherboard? A bad memory card?
Have you ever encountered this before?

I tried your test, and it failed. I took the memory card out of slot 3 and the computer booted up correctly. Will it hurt to leave it like this as long as the computer is apparently working okay?
The numbers for the motherboard are etched into the board near the memory slot 1 (has a Dell sticker with Rev. A02 printed on it), but the configuration is exactly like the one you have the link to.

No, it should not damage the system, running on one module, but the computer will loose some of it's performance, as the memory for the 8400 should be installed in matched pairs, for maximum performance.
As the system boots, then it would appear that the either memory module or the motherboard slot has failed. Most likely it's the memory module.

Exactly what does the BSOD say?
The 8400 doesn't absolutely require 2 RAM modules. But to take advantage of the speed and capabilities of the (required) DDR2 RAM, you need 2 matching modules in the correct slots. If either module alone works in slot 1, then it's less likely to be bad RAM.
Are you sure about the part number for the motherboard? That doesn't sound like a board for the 8400. The 8400 uses a Dell 0U7077 motherboard.
Either way, if one stick works at a time, but not 2, then it could be a motherboard failure. :(
Try this: With PC unplugged from the wall, put RAM in slots 1&2 (slot 1 is closest to the processor and slot 2 is the third one from the processor), and then clear NVRAM by removing battery from the motherboard. Press/hold power button on front of tower for ~30 sec and reinstall the battery (right side up!). Close the case and try to boot.
