INTERNET LOG ON PROBLEMS

ONLY GET ON HALF THE TIME. OTHER HALF IT SAYS NO DIAL TONE OR CAN'T DETECT CARRIER. SOMETIMES WILL GET ON AND GET CUT OFF RIGHT AWAY--IT JUST SAYS LOST CONNECTION-NO EXPLANATION. IF HAVING NO LUCK GETTING ON--IF I SHUT DOWN AND START AGAIN-IT WILL USUALLY GET ON. I KNOW IT IS MY DELL, BECAUSE MY OLD COMPAQ PRESARIO WORKS FINE--IT IS NOT MY PHONE LINE OR AOL. I DID CALL SERVICE-BUT THE WAIT WAS 60 MINUTES-FINALLY GOT SOMEONE-THEY SENT ME ATHENS 98 TO DOWNLOAD. I THOUGHT I DOWNLOADED-BUT IT DOESN'T SHOW UP IN MY DOWNLOAD MANAGER AND I AM STILL HAVING THE TROUBLE. I FOUND ATHENS 98 IN MY C:--DO I HAVE TO GET IT INTO DOWNLOAD MANAGER OR SHOULD IT HAVE CORRECTED THE PROBLEM ANYWAY FROM C:. IF THATS THE CASE THEN I NEED A NEW FIX. CAN'T GET THROUGH TO SERVICE--DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO STAY ON THE PHONE THAT LONG.

ALSO HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM WHEN GOING ON MY MERRILL LYNCNCH ACCOUNT--WHEN I CLICK ON STATEMENT--IT SAYS ERROR ON PAGE--SO I CAN'T VIEW IT--HOW DO YOU CORRECT THE ERROR?

CAN ANYONE HELP?

First, all capital letters in email and board messages denotes yelling. It isn't considered polite.

Now, as to your problems. First I would check and make sure your modem is not having any problems. Check this under the modem icon in control panel. Second, make sure your modem is correctly plugged into the proper jacks in the back of the computer, and make sure they are plugged in securely. If your modem can't find a dial tone, you may have a delayed tone from your phoneco, in which case you'll need to set your modem to "wait for dial tone."

As for the Athens98 download: I am not familiar with this program. However, if you can find the setup.exe file for this program in your C drive, then double click on it and install it. Downloading is only downloading not installing. Perhaps your download manager put it in the wrong place or messed up in some other way. At any rate, make sure the program has actually installed. If not, download it again and install. Again, I'm not familiar with download managers so I don't know exactly what you mean by that. I simply download files or programs to my "download/software or download/music, etc. file I've created on my C drive, then install from there. I'm not sure what needs to be managed from a download.

As for your Merrill Lynch problem, many times error messages like that are caused by faulty coding on the website or a server error on the website. This error sounds as if it is a problem at Merrill Lynch. I'd try emailing them and giving details of the page which won't open and the exact error message you receive when trying to open that page.

Hope this is a little helpful.
