if yoru msn appears in your tray, there should be MSMSGS in you start up. you can either uncheck that in your msconfig, start up, or you could go into express outlook into the optioins file and uncheck the options to automatically start up msn. what i did is i uninstall msn messenger outright. you can do this if you go to your add/remove funtion in your control panel.

Since it's happening when you open OE....Try checking OE's menu bar under tools>options>general tab, make sure "automatically logon to MSN Messenger service" isn't selected. Deselect it if it is selected, apply>ok out & see if that does it for you.

Possible misunderstanding: after posting this I realized that you did not say that you were using XP. The following procedures apply only to XP; in 2K or 9X Windows Messenger appears as a choice on the Add/Remove Programs by default. It does not do so in XP.

Several ways to do it, all somewhat complex. Microsoft does not make it easy to get rid of their junk. (1) If you do not use MSN Explorer, uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs. Then open regedit (Start\Run\Regedit), go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and delete all reference to Windows Messenger (the file is something like msmsgs.exe). Then do the same for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. If you leave MSN Explorer installed it will restore the registry key for Messenger on reboot. (2) If you want to keep MSN Explorer, then open, in Notepad, the file Windows\Inf\sysoc.inf; find the line that refers to Windows Messenger (begins msmsgs=); remove the "hide" (no quotes and remove nothing else; the line will end up with two adjacent commas; both must be there). To do this you will have to have told Windows via Folder Options to "Show hidden files and folders" and to have removed the check from "Hide protected operating system files". Save the changed file; close Notepad. Then go to Add/Remove programs and you will find Windows Messenger listed as a program which you can remove. Tell Windows to remove it.

If you are unfamiliar with editing the Registry, make certain you export the Registry key (or the whole registry) which you are about to edit so that you can restore it if you mess it up (highlight the key, go to File\Export and tell it to export to some location which you can get to easily (My Docs or a floppy). Or if you edit sysoc.inf, you might want to save it somewhere before attempting the edit (especially if you are unfamiliar with editing inf files).

This will completely uninstall the MSN Messenger program.


Microsoft has tried really hard to prevent you from uninstalling windows messenger. They failed to make it difficult enough because with the directions below you can get rid of messenger very easily.

Navigate to C:\windows\inf\ (this is a hidden folder)
Open sysoc.inf
find msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 in the file and take out the word hide so the line would look like msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
Close the file and save it
Now go to the Add and remove programs applet in the control panel and you will be able to uninstall windows messenger.
Make sure to click on the add remove windows components button.
Note: You will be able to uninstall other unneeded programs by removing hide from the sysoc.inf file as well.

I don't have the sysoc.inf on windows inf. I changed my settings to show hidden files and it is not there. I also did a search and it isn't there. Where could it be? I am running Windows ME. Thanks

I'm sorry and maybe i did'nt fully understand all what was siad>>>But if msn messenger is starting up when oe is being opened then msn is in your computer,, under Add/remove programs and it is also in your startup, and so on. If its on your computer then it can be removed, Im also running windows Me and msn is in all three, Startup, add/remove programs and ctrl/alt/delete.

I'm helping out a neighbor that has a new 4300 with ME on it and I.E 5.5..When he opens Outlook Express--MSN Messenger also kicks in as does Karenrs . It is not in Outlook's Options, Add/Remove or msconfig. My neighbor doesn't even know the difference but, it is a definate issue and any further input would be great as it has me stumped.

Reread my edited message; the directions which I give are for XP only. In ME Windows Messenger shows up in Add/Remove Programs\Windows Programs by default; it does not do so in XP. You should be able to uninstall it, if you do not want to use it.
