New XPS Computer Series Availability

I have been planning to purchase the XPS 630 computer since June, but apparently the problems with that computer model will not be fixed.

I am wondering when, during the year, Dell will come out with improved versions of the XPS series (example - such as the XPS 720 to 730, etc).  Are these upgrades normally just before Christmas?  Any comments and/or suggestions would be very much appreciated, Sam.

There will be no  720 to 730 upgrade from Dell. If you want to do this you will be entirely on your own. IF you are referring to new systems a general rule is 1 to 1.5 yrs after the latest release. Remember this is not a hard and fast rule but is generally the case.

Do yourself a favor and check out some smaller custom build sites before comitting to making your purchase. I almost bought a XPS630 Desktop after sending back my XPS1730 Laptop because of graphic card issues. I had all my specs in order and then went to see what it would cost at other companies. What a difference! For the amount you'll spend on a DELL you can get 2X the computer on some smaller custom build sites (with better parts, better warranty, and from all I can see so far, better support.

The 630 is in the sweet spot, isn't it? :)

As it just came out, it will not be replaced for at least a year most likely.

Dell will get the bugs out so that it doesn't hang on ESA profile changes, etc.  However, I doubt the MoBo will be upgraded to resolve the 8x/16x issue.

Davet50, thanks very much for your reply.  My posting was not too clear, I was referring to new systems, specifically one replacing the XPS 630, hopefully going to a new series and indirectly resolving the current problems.  The XPS 630 has the desired features/size that I want.  I have looked at other Dell computer serious (ie., 755, 410, etc. but none appear to have the full features/size of the 630.  I would very much like to purchase the XPS 730 but the tower is too big for my computer desk.  Thanks again, Sam.

I expect that we will see a refresh if not a whole new system this fall when Intel releases Nehalem.

Zoder, many thanks for your reply.  I am willing to wait until fall, since my computer is in good shape and I backup frequently to DVD and external HDs.  Thanks again, Sam

P.S Maybe by then Dell will have ironed out the 630 problems!!! - wishful thinking??

No problem.  Just keep in mind that the first wave will be the highend chips.  So be prepared to pay a lot of money.  The mainstream won't be out until 1st qtr 2009.
