UNSOLVED
Hard drive selftest failed.
Hi,
Recently our Dell Inspiron 1720 running Windows Vista latest service pack suffered from slow startup/shutdown and even freezing. Running virusscan from Bitdefender Rescue disk shows nothing found. After running the hardware test from Dell errors were reported on the harddisk :
- Hardware drive self-test failed 2000-0142 status 79
- Error code 0F00:075D DISK_0 The self-test failed the read portion of the test
- Error code 0F00:0232 Msg: DISK_0 - Block 364325248: timeout waiting for IRQ
Warranty is expired.
Do we have to replace the harddisk or os there another possibility to recover? We have the data backed-up, os and program files will have to be reinstalled. Can I use the cd delivered with oem-windows to load on a new disk?
Frans.
Ps. Why doesn't Bitdefender Rescue (built on ubuntu) have problems to read the disk?

Seems to me the link you gave is not ok. When I click it I am directed to //http://www.dell.com/
Today I went to buy a hdd but i was told this type is not very common so please give me a list of compatible drives. (the problem is the Inspiron has a fixed part in which the drive goes but normally for sata this comes with the drive????)

Hi fbeyl,
Welcome to the Community,
The error you got indicates HDD failure and the HDD needs to be replaced.Yes,OEM Windows disk can be used to reinstall windows on the new HDD.
Not sure about the Bitdefender not being able to read disk.
Use the link below to see the list of compatible HDD for your system model:
