monitor problems

when i got my 5150 i ordered an S-video cable with it so i can watch my dvds through my laptop onto my T.V. however when i plugged it in, i could only get a black and white picture on my t.v. so i went and got another cable. unfortunatly this has not helped. i am still without colour. any ideas on how i can fix it ? i have a 64mb Nvidia GEforceFX GO5200 video card. i dont know of any other details i could give that would be relevant to help anyone fix it. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Does your TV have an s-video input or are going through an adaptor first?   I saw this when using one type s-video to composite adaptor.  Tried another type and it was fine.

im not using any adaptors just the cable going from the s-vid out to the s-vid in, its strange i would have thought it would work perfectly or not at all...the fact its in black and white shows a signal is getting there...just losing all colour along the way. i am now realising im not the first person with this problem by a long way...could it be a problem with the laptop or are there some Nvidia settings or other controls i need to be changing and havnt found yet ?

Have the cable plugged in, power on the tv, then power up the notebook.  It should detect it connected and output.

    Hi Jonosd,

I was searching for a solution to my problem when i came accross yours.  Your TV is probably set on PAL system while your Laptop output is set on NTSC or viseversa.  I had the same exact problem, and the solution is to go to the Adapter graphics properties and selecting PALb (50Hz) if your TV is PAL, or NTSC (60Hz) if your TV is NTSC!  It worked with me, I hope it will work with you.

    Hey,

There is probably a conflic between your TV settings and your Laptop Video Output settings.  i.e. one is set to NTSC (60Hz) and the other to PAL (50Hs).  Here is what I would do (after connecting the Laptop to the TV, and transfering output):

    1. Go to TV menu and toogle the TV (AV channel) Video Output setting, and change it from NTSC to PAL, or viseversa.

    2. If your TV is old, or is not "multisystem", then you cannot perform STEP 1 above.  Therefore, the settings of the Laptop Video Output must be changed.  This can be accessed by Right-clicking on Desktop, going to Properties > Settings[tab] > Advanced... There you can change from NTSC to PAL-b, or viseversa. (you might have more than one PAL, I would go with PAL-b).

If this does not work, I would advise to UNISTALL the video card drivers, and REINSTALL them again.  Make sure to reinstall the drivers that came with the Dell 5100 (i.e. when purchased) . If you no longer have that CD, go to www.dell.com (support section) and you can download it there.

    Hope this will work.

no there is no conflict between the settings on my tv and the settings on my computer.... these were the same exact  settings i used before when it did work... i dont have a pal tv... i live in america and have an ntsc tv.... there is probly about 50 people in this forum who have the same exact problem... everyone says try a different cord... im absolutely positive the cord works... everyone says change it from ntsc to pal... that doesnt work.... i am a former dell technician... i know how to trouble shoot... the onlything i havent tried is reformatting my computer... and the reason why is because i dont want to spend hours backing up all my information if its not going to solve my problem... my question is if sooo many dell customers have the same exact problem why isnt dell making any effort to find a solution or at least find out what is causing the problem.... if you have a real answer besides changing the cable or switching the settings from ntsc to pal PLEASE POST A REPLY....

    Had the same problem....

Asked Dell and this is the link to their reply.  Seemed to fit what I was able to struggle through myself.  Works in color!!

Hello. I was just wanting to know if you got anywhere with this problem because i rented 3 movies over the NY weekend and had to watch all of them in black n' white. Talk about going back in time. Anyway i tried everything and the only thing that may have caused this change is the latest sevice pack from microsoft (SP2). I have been watching movies on my tv via the computer DVD for over 3 years and all of a sudden its in B/W. A Windows Auto Update was installed recently, thats why i think it may have caused the problem. Please post or email at rcbigr@yahoo.com if you can figure this thing out.

I have a Inspiron 5150 with GeForce 5200 and the same problem - tried all above mentioned tricks, but no success.
If so many people have this problem, why cannot Dell take care of it!?
There are some movies which are cooler in B/W but most aren´t.
