Monitor flashes black 3 times...WHY?

My monitor just started acting weird this morning...

When I started my computer, the desktop screen flashed black 3 times. The screen goes completely black for about 1 second and then back on.

Now, as I'm sitting here typing a paper, it has happened 2 more times.

What is happening??

This has been happening to me constantly with a brand new flat screen monitor. I have gone through hours of trying to fix the problem, but still it continues. I am waiting on Dell coming up with the answer and will let you know if any fixes solve my problems. Most annoying....
