ST2210 21.5 inch flicker / potential ground loop problem

Hi

I just bought this full hd monitor to use as an external monitor for my hp tablet tx2513cl laptop. Its connected to my laptop through the external vga port. As soon as i connect it i start to get flicker. Upon researching it appears that the issue is related to a ground loop problem.

I also tried the same monitor with my hp dv9700t laptop using hdmi and using vga. hdmi reduces but does not eliminate flicker.  I need this monitor to work with my tablet as i simply need a bigger monitor for work.

I cannot chat with technical support because dell doesnt have a service tag on the monitor. When i called order support they offered to replace it. I dont think i want to go through the hassle if the replacement is going to do the same thing.

Can someone from dells tech support team contact me to resolve the issue.

What is sad is that i have a 10 year older 17 inch flat panel 4:3 monitor that has absolutely no flicker issues. Its sad that newer monitors are simply not up to the standard of the older ones.

I have high regard for dell products and i hope the technical support can help me.

Regards

As a check, disconnect the 3 prong power cord from the laptop. Does the monitor flicker go away?

    Hi Chris

It does. I tried this on both the laptops. As soon as power cord is disconnected the flicker goes away. I even tried putting the monitor and the laptop on two different apc ups's as well as on the same one.

The minute i connect power cord to the laptop, i see the monitor start to flicker. I have heard hdmi cable reduces flicker but i dont have that option on this tablet pc.

Ground loop. Do you have a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter to put on the end of the laptop cord to see if it helps?

I do have the adapters. Based on what i have read, the suggestion seems to be to put the adapter on the monitor cord.  However before i try that i would like to understand the risks involved both for the laptop and the monitor.

As a second point, i also tried to connect the same monitor to a older desktop which has a ati radeon hd 3200 card via dvi and the monitor still flickers.

If you feel that a replacement would solve my problem i would be glad to try that option. Otherwise i want to return it.

    Regards

A replacement monitor will not change the issue. I had a laptop customer who used a 2 prong AC cord on his laptop and the issue went away.

    Hi Chris

I cannot do that as it will void my laptop warranty. I checked with HP today and that is not supported. Thanks for working with me to resolve this issue.

Can you help me get an rma to return the monitor. Also i want to be absolutely sure that dell is not going to impose a restocking fee due to the fact that the monitor is defective.

I bought this monitor for business use and while i understand that monitors can have issues, my confidence has gone in dell monitors. I do thank you for the effort to help me resolve this. Thanks for the time you have taken to research and respond.

    Regards

I also read on an hp forum that heavy duty shielded cables can potentially solve the problem. Here is the post:

Do you think that will solve the problem and if so will dell send me a shielded vga cable?

    Regards

    * I cannot. All I can do is dispatch parts. Only Order Support can do an RMA.

    * We do not have triple shielded VGA cables.

Is it possible to plug the PC and monitor into two different wall jacks to see if the flicker goes away?

You could also trya 3 to 2 pin non-grounded adapter on the monitor.
