Strange Dell 2407WFP problem...NEED INPUT!!!

Here's the scoop:

P4 @ 2.6GHz
ASUS P4P800
1GB PC-3200 DDR
9700PRO

Running the screen at native resolution (1920x1200) using a DVI cable and randomly the screen would become distorted (blue/yellow horizontal flashing lines across the entire screen/blinking pixels). This occurred when browsing the net. When scrolling down the page, these abnormalities move with the page, therefore it didn't seem like a problem with the monitor but rather a rendering problem with the video card. When minimizing the browser, the desktop however appears normal. Opening another IE window, the same area of the page had the same issue. To make matters even stranger, when you shut off the monitor and then turn it back on, the page is displayed properly and the lines/blinking pixels are gone. This would leave one to believe that it is a monitor issue. No change when connected through VGA.

What could the problem be due to? Video card or monitor? Keep in mind that this happens randomly.

Thanks.

When I noticed it the first time, I unhooked the DVI cable and re-connected it again. I still got the same issue.

Did you try another cable? At least you eliminate the possibility before you spend hours on complex troubleshooting :)

It could also be the DVI cable. Ensure the connections are good too.

I have exactly the same problem with my 30".
The solution I've found is to change the brightness or gamma (with Catalyst tool because I have an ATI card).

    My config :
    P4P800 E-Deluxe - P4 2,8GHz
    Sapphire X1950 PRO 512Mo AGP
    Dell 3007 with 1 Dual-link on one connector (2560x1600)
Samsung 204B on the other connector (1600x1200)

    Thanks for the reply Adobex.
So you do not think I need to exchange my 2407 as it is only a few weeks old?

Did it happen very sporadically? A couple times a week tops?

Well, I don't know... How to be sure the pb will disappear with a new screen? I think it's more a pb of compatibility between the card and the screen but I'm not sure.

I also have my screen for only a few weeks, and since I've tuned those parameters, I don't have those lines anymore. And if I put the default settings, the lines come back... That's why I'm not worry about that because I can control the pb.

Me, I have another pb, it is a kind of black blink occuring approximatively once an hour (sometimes more). It is very short, while 1/25s and I think it is because of the screen, because my other screen connected on the same card, doesn't have that pb. The pb, seems to be a lose of synchronisation but why ? I don't know... I continue to test other settings to see if there is an interaction... But all those pb are really annoying. (I didn't talk about my 3 partially dead pixels)

Dell actually sent me a refurb monitor to see if the problem still persists and yes I still got those nasty blue flashing lines in the screen!

    Kevlarstar,

2 monitors with the same issue. I would say it was the video card.

I figured it was the video card as well but when I changed the video card I still had the issue!!!

Can it be a combination of the Monitor/ATI Video Card? Some other problem?

My nasty lines are maybe more specific to my pb, because they have mixed colors and not only blue or any mono color. Then, I think a convergence of signal components levels (RVB + Brigtness or gamma) is not compatible with the screen.
That means probably, either the screen nor the graphic card doesn't respect norms.

And you say, you've tried another card but as you do not precise wich one, I guess it was the same model : ATI 9700 PRO... Then, difficult to be sure that it is or not a graphic card/screen compatibility.
Well, you don't need a powerfull one to test 1920x1200 resolution and confirm or not the lines pb. Maybe someone can lend to you another gc...

Did you installed the Catalyst manager ? If yes, what gives tunings? Do you know there are specific options for high res screens ? If no, why ?

Was the other screen, Dell sent to you, from the same series ? If no, there is less chances the pb comes from the screen.
