DSL & caller id waiting

Hi- I have 2 Dells- the one at home uses the modem on hold (dial up-people pc)
I have caller Id Call waiting  on the 2nd & 1st pc
-On my 2nd pc I used to use dial up but i had the 'catch a call' box installed. I took out the box. GOt DSL. Now, when a call comes in on this 2nd pc, it shows on my fax phone display either "caller-id error"  or "no service" . I called qwest and they verified lines were good. The technician had  filtered everything from the main box outside(so he said) so I dont need those little filters. Qwest told me to contact DELL>i havent ...yet.
I went in the modem area in the 'control panel' & in the modem on hold section, the box enable modem on hold was not checked. so I checked it (to enable) to see that did anything. called phone # still did not display. so, i went back to uncheck that box.
let me add that I have only one line at the 2nd pc. i had even connected a caller id box in a seperate jack. and although the connection said OK on the CID box, when i called the number, it would ring twice. only. If I answered the phone, the call would terminate right away.
As far as my pc @ home, I have a CID box connected to a separate jack. when  call comes in, the display on my pc shows whos calling. BUT also, my CID box makes a click noise. and shows the call that is trying to come in. SO all is good @ home.
*my only gripe is that when I answer the call, my caller can barely hear me and I can barely hear him. only until I disconnect the internet connection, are we able to hear each other just fine.
Both Pc's are/have same=WIndows XP HOME-OEM-sp2-dell 2300 dimension. BVRP utilities installed.
WHat can I try (providing that all qwest connections are good & correct)- thanks for your help

Since you have DSL at the one locatin, you are no longer using the PC's modem and the "modem on hold" is not applicable.  You need to set your equipment up for a telco line but without any "hold" type options.  Your external analog telephone equipment should operate normally, just as it does on any other analog telephone connection.

Since the telco has split the data and voice externally at the telco demarc box, usually they use the standard Red/Green cable pair for the voice (what is normally used) and that is why you don't need the filters or need to do anything to the analog voice telephone jacks.   However, then normally use the 2nd pair - the black/yellow for the data and that gets a little more technical, depending on what you have or how it's connected.  There are two options (1) to rewire the telco jack at the PC so the Black/Yellow wires are connected where the Red/Green were connected inside the jack so you can use a standard "RJ-11" (4 wire) telco cable to connect to the DSL modem.  or (2) providing the Black/Yellow wires are connected in the telco jack to the normal Black/Yellow points, then you need an external cable to "cross over" the wires so the Black/Yellow "data" appears at the end of the cable that connects to the DSL modem.  Usually, you will need a separate "analog" telco jack if you want the analog telephone line connection for a telephone or for the PC's modem.

:smileyindifferent:  HUH?  Oops, im sorry, I should have stated that I am new to this kind of thing and overall pc stuff. You stated:

You need to set your equipment up for a telco line but without any "hold" type options.  Your external analog telephone equipment should operate normally, just as it does on any other analog telephone connection.

This Telco stuff that you suggested, is this something that I can do?? do I download a program off the net? Is it free?

I called qwest again and they say it is nothing out of the ordinary for DSL customers to have caller id/caller wating features working. No set up is necessary. apparently, I am the first case, they say, having these kinds of problems.

I even mentioned a few lines of the advice you gave me and they did not know nothing about what I was talking about?

Note that I never had modem on hold enable here at this 2nd pc. did not need to cause I used the Catch-a-call box. Do I need to do anything with a call waiting feature on the pc, if I have one, like enable it? sorry, this is usuch a pain for me too. thanks

Fireberd: thanks for your help. however, I called my fax phone company (sharp) and I told them what my problem was. she said that since the fax machine is connected directly to the dsl modem, that perhaps that is the reason that the info is not registering on the caller ID screen on the fax machine. :smileymad: she says that some fax machines donot support all that traffic that is coming into it. (just cause it is connected to the modem itself)-

I guess I could have started there first. I had first thought that my problem was with Qwest, or my not configuring something on my Dell pc.

So, sorry for the post. but, perhaps it can be of help to some other people. also, i plugged in a caller id/call waiting cordless phone that i had  at home and VIOLA ! ! I can see who the person calling is. It appears that my caller id box did not work (though it did before)- so that threw me off too to find a solution to the problem.

Long story short: "Just when you think you have done ALL the troubleshooting yourself, you really haven't". thanks for the info anyways. cheers !:smileyvery-happy:
