modem preventing system from sleeping

I started getting this message a few months ago. It pops up after I close the lid on my Inspiron 1100 to put it to sleep.

"The device driver for the 'Conextant D480 MDC v.9x Modem' is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver.

Well, I updated my driver and that corrected the problem... until I rebooted. It seems that after I install the new driver the system sleeps fine, however, after I shutdown or restart the system the problem comes back. Any help or info would be appreciated. Thanx

Wow... I basically have the same problem with my Inspiron 2500... this happened after I downloaded microsoft updates... my modem is getting installed on comport 3 because comport 1 is supposedly being used by another application... if I uninstall the modem and install again it recognises the modem and I can dial out until I shut it down and start again I cannot dial out... also when I try to hibernate it tells me it cannot and tells me to update comport 1... I have Windows 2000 operating software... I hope somebody may have a solution for us

That is always caused by an application trying to call home, or holding the modem port so it can look for updates when it wants.
