Netgear WGT624 wireless router help needed!

I am trying to help my girfriend setup this router. The setup seems to require a PC with a wired ethernet connection, but initially she will only be connecting a new Toshiba laptop that will not be networked with any other computers. Her desktop is an ancient, slow, infected Win2000 OS, so I thought I'd take my notebook over there and use it to run the setup. Will this work?

Any tips or suggestions or links would be appreciated. I've downloaded the manuals and reference guides from Netgear and will take these along with me, but any help from someone who's been there & done that will be welcomed!

    Thanks, Steve.

She has been unable to set it up using only her laptop. Does it need to be set up using a computer other than the laptop she wants to connect wirelessly?

You should be able to connect to configure the router using any computer that has an ethernet network adapter.

Thus far I have not been able to get the router to connect to the internet before (to check for firmware updates)or after running setup manually or using the "wizard".

    > The connection from the modem is fine when connected directly to either computer.

    > Windows firewall is turned off.

    > McAfee firewall is disabled.

    > TCP/IP is set to obtain IP and DNS addresses automatically.

    > I have tried power cycling modem, router and computer.

    > I have tried resetting the router.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. We're about ready to talk to someone in India unless I come up with something else to try. The ISP is BellSouth. I have tried configuring with and without password.

If you open Network Connections, right click on your wireless network connection and select "View Available Wireless Networks", does your router show up there?  Did you enable any of the security settings on the router (MAC address filetering, WEP or WPA encryption)?

Is the router set to hide its SSID?  If so, back in and unhide the SSID and rename it to from it's default name to something you can easily recoginze.

Thanks for the reply, Steve. No, the router does not show up under "view available connections". I did enable some security settings on the router (WEP) during one attempt, but subsequently re-set the router and still can't get it to connect.

I didn't see anything indicating that the SSD is hidden, but I'll check. I'm pretty sure when I re-set it the default SSD was restored.

Couldn't solve it myself, but the very nice Indian lady from Netgear tech support was able to get everything working. I wish I could remember everything she had me do, but I was tired and somewhat distracted by my girlfriend (which is a good thing!)

The tech support lady had me connect the router to the computer while the modem was unconnected. She did have me change some settings appropriate to the BellSouth modem which I could never have figured out myself. To her credit, she did set up the router with reasonably good security settings.

I do wish they would find a way to make the setup on these things easier.....
