Perc3 or Perc4?
We are configuring a new PE 2600. I have several configuration questions. Do I get Perc3 or Perc4, embedded or not, how many internal or external channels? We don't plan on using any additional SCSI devices? Do we need the Media Bay Hard Drive Cages with a 1x6 backplane, with 4x36GB drives, raid5? Is the AR5/N Add-in Card Raid 5, no drives in media bay the correct factory configuration?

The reason I ask is that when I talked to someone in Dell parts about additional drive carriers thinking that I could go from 6 drives to 8 drives, I got a sort of surprised "the 2800 supports 8 drives?" comment. In addition the web site configurator does not permit 8 drives to be specified with a split backplane and Raid1;Raid5. So the backplane is 1x8 or 2x4, right?As for the original question; it depends on the demands you place on the system. For some one four-drive RAID 5 set is sufficient. For others a combination of different RAID levels on multiple channels makes more sense. I would agree with Bob, go with the embedded ROMB controller and the standard backplane and leave off the media bay -- unless you need to have multiple channels or a large number of drives.The newer 8th generation PE 2800 is also recommended.David
