We recently purchased a md3000i and have been having serious issues getting the device on the network and even pingable from one of the managment interfaces. Our configuration is simple and as follows:
Frame 0
Mgmt Interface: 10.1.6.177 / 255.255.255.0
iSCSI Port 0 : 10.1.12.30 / 255.255.255.0
iSCSI Port 1 : 10.1.12.31 / 255.255.255.0
Frame 1
Mgmt Interface: 10.1.6.178 / 255.255.255.0
iSCSI Port 0 : 10.1.12.32 / 255.255.255.0
iSCSI Port 1 : 10.1.12.33 / 255.255.255.0
We have a network topology built around a cisco 6509 with multiple blades in the device. We cabled the devices so they are each on a differnt blade and use VLAN's to break out the blades into multiple networks. For our setup here, you'll see the mgmt interfaces are both on VLAN 201 (our managment network) (10.1.6.x) and the iSCSi interfaces are on VLAN 501 (10.1.12.x).
Also please note the following:
* DHCP is not an option in our infrastructure, so everything has been assigned staticlly.
* I have updated the firmware to R191137.
* Switch is set to use Spanning Tree
* Switch is set for autoneg
* Mac Addresses are never given to our switch, even though the interface is cabled and int is up on the swtitch side.
Issue:
We initially configured the device using a direct attatched laptop and modified the default network settings from the factory to our network settings. The host was then cabled up to the network. It has never made itself available to the network. We have verified these cables and switch interfaces are good by connecting another device and bringing it up on the network with these exact settings without any issues.
The only way I have been able to manage the device is by direct connecting my laptop to Frame 0's mgmt interface. Even when I'm able to do this, I've never been able to manage Frame 1's setup.
Question:
Am I fundamentally missing something here? This is my first attempt at configuring a storage device such as this. What can I do to further troubleshoot this? The managment software is very limited in terms of exposing any troubleshooting tools and I haven't found the way to connec to the device using a CLI of any sort.
Please folks, any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated, I'm desperate to get this device up and running so I can get my ESX servers off local storage and onto this device.
Dell recommends that you enable your switch
Spanning Tree
setting to
Port Fast
when using the MD3000i system.
Ethernet switch ports that are connected to Server Host ports and MD3000i iSCSI ports should be set to
Port Fast
.
The
Port Fast
setting allows switch ports to be in a faster forwarding state, allowing network traffic iSCSI login sessions to be established with minimum wait time.
It's the simple things that tend to bite you. I had one of our Jr guys cable this all up, unfortunately he used a crossover cable from the patch panel to the switch which was causing our issues. Finally time to work on actually configuring the device.

What version of ESX are you using?
Have you seen the PowerVault Configuration Guide for VMware ESX?
Have you checked out the MD3000i support matrix?
