Cannot replace my second hard drive

I have a Dell Dimension 2400, running XP, BIOS A05. I just bought a new hard disk drive (400 GB Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 IDE).
It is just just not recognized by the PC at start-up. I have tried all of the following:
  • Removed battery, ensured that the unit is fullw powered down.
  • Launched setup
  • [alt] and sequences
  • etc...
  • The new disk is setup with cable select

Despite all of that, the system is incapable of detecting the proper configuration and cannot boot.

It only does so, when I remove the new disk. Then it identifies the main hard disk, and the two CD / DVD readers.

What am I doing wrong?

I looked at some of the other messages which appeared to have the same issue, but nothing in them had the answer to my problem. :smileymad:

After the physical installation, check the BIOS setup, that the second drive is to auto [on]  and then use XP's disk management to partition and format the drive.

These are generic instructions for installing an additional hard drive using Windows XP Disk Management, they are by Seagate, but apply to all brands,

    Bev,

You wrote "check the BIOS setup, that the second drive is to auto [on]": is this in the "Integrated devices (LegacySelect Options)" tab?

Sorry, you probably meant the "Drive configuration" tab. All 4 drives on auto, with the exception of diskette drive.

I now get the following message:
    "Primary drive 0 not found
    Primary drive 1 not found
    Secondary drive 0 not found
    Secondary drive 0 not found
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility"

F1 loops. And F2 brings me back to the same BIOS configuration screen, where I am obviously not doing the right thing since it takes me back to the above mentioned message.

Then try resetting the BIOS defaults, restart the system and click F2 to enter the BIOS. Then turn on the num lock, caps lock and scroll lock keys on your Keyboard.

Followed by ALT+E, ALT+F and ALT+B and you should hear a beep after every sucessful key-strokes.

The system will restart and check that it boots and if there are any other error messages.

Did you set the second hard drive's jumpers to "Cable Select" and connect it to the middle connector of the primary IDE cable?

Dell has not published instructions for installing a second IDE/EIDE hard drive in a D-2400, but as the D-4600 has the same case and chassis, you can use the same instructions for the physical installation.

To add to a recent post, simply click on it, pick Message Options, then Edit.

All drives on cable select, new one on the middle connector.  XP must be current, and make sure you have the latest system bios.
