Do you have a floppy drive in the system? If not, go into setup (f2) and turn off the setting for it.

Turn off the floppy in setup then, and be sure your hard drive is properly detected.

Now, what you're describing makes more sense. I would guess you've got a failing hard drive.

Power on, press F12 immediately, and load the Dell diagnostics. Run the extended test on the hard drive. If it fails, report the error to Dell and they'll ship you a warranty replacement if you're under warranty.

If it passes, mount the drive in a working system as a secondary and copy your data, and then return the drive to the system and boot the XP CD. You can then either try a repair or you can reformat and reinstall.

How long is the warranty, I bought the computer in October 2004.  If there is no warranty, is this a big problem to fix the hard drive?  What causes this?
