Does Latitude D810 come with a DVD decoder?
I have a brand new Latitude D810 that came with Sony DVD R/RW drive. First, the drive would not recognize any DVD, but only CDs. Then, the system admn. at our office downloaded something and it now reads and writes data DVDs.
However, I cannot play any DVD on it. The computer asks for a DVD-decoder. I thought it should be standard with original equipment.

- for my C610 I bought WinDVD 3 for a couple of bucks on ebay and installed it, having tried the free vlc French program that only ran commercial DVD's. I now can record plus and minus RW from my tv mounted DVD recorder and play them on my C610. Love it.

Machines do not come with hardware decoders anymore as software can do this with any cpu of 300mhz or faster. The DVD drive may have come with a PowerDVD disk or it may not. Buying a DVD decoder software online is $20.
Puppy Linux comes with a DVD decoder/player software.
