Hello I have a Dimension E520 and both of my drives dont appear anymore when I click on "my computer" I can put disc in them and eject them but it doesn't run them.
I checked under device manager and this is the message I got "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)" it says that for both of my drives.
The drives I have are:
Nec DVD+RW ND-3650A
Sony DVD-Rom DDU16155
I haven't installed any new hardware or software. It was working earlier the only thing I hooked up to the computer has been a SD card reader and it was working after I was done with that. I didn't notice the problem till I was about to run a game.
Since you are saying that u are unable to see them in My computer window the only next step to perform is to check whether the drives are detected by the BIOS. Switch off ur computer. resart it. On the first BIOS screen press F2 once or twice. You would enter system BIOS. Check in Drives whether both the drives are visible. If they are not you would need to open the chassis ans reseat the IDE cables and check again.
Go to www.the-predator.com and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3. These will install fresh/clean drivers for the drive and the IDE controller.
If those do not help, same CD/RW link, Section 12, article 3, step #2. This is Dell`s diagnostic test for optical drives.
To add with Dave`s, the Code 41 message is related to the Upper & Lower Filters. Please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Scetion 100, article 31 for the Microsoft article on this error message. The majority of the time, the article should clear up the problem.
Best Regards!

Glad to hear the news Poetic, thanks for posting back. The steps Dave gave you are our standard steps we recommend, most people at times will not list any Code errors, which was the key in your case.
Best of luck with your system.
