On second thought, my answer stands. Uninstall and reinstall Cineplayer.

 

Alternately, try VLC Media Player (link in my signature).

VLC doesn't play the disc either.  The disc doesn't "register" with the drive.  Before I used to be thrown in to Cineplayer, now I get nothing.  The disc is in the drive, but it just sits there with the light on the drive blinking.

There are two issues confounding the failure to play a DVD:
1. Can the drive read the disc?
2. Does the XP autoplay function work properly and is it set to play your decoder when a disc is inserted.

What we need to do is sort out the first question. Here's how to do that:
1. Insert a DVD disc in your drive. Open My Computer, then right click your DVD drive and select Explore from the context menu.
2. You should see the audio and video folders, then a bunch of VOB and other files in the video folder.
3. If you can see these, then the drive is working properly and you're having a software issue preventing your system from playing the movie.
4. If you cannot see these files, boot to safe mode and go through step 1 again.

OK--When I insert a game disk and go to "my computer" I can list all the files on the DVD no problem.  When I insert a movie it hangs the system.  On reinsertion the drive light blinks on and off.  Clicking "My computer" hangs the system with a hourglass that never resolves itself.  So to summerize--the DVD works fine when it is not a movie and hangs when a movie is inserted.

Did you uninstall Cineplayer (as I suggested at first)?

Yes I did.  I also uninstalled Realplayer.  As before, a DVD that I made works perfectly, but the movie isn't recognized.  I tried another movie and that isn't recognized either.
