DVD-RW Doesn't Recognize Blank Discs

I have a Vostro 200 with a DVD-RW (HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSAH31N).

It reads DVD’s and CD’s without a problem. However when using the drive to burn, it doesn’t recognize a blank DVD. In 'My Computer' the drive icon will change from an image labeled DVD-RW drive to an image labeled CD Drive (even though there is ablank DVD inside), and if I click on it, I get a message, 'please insert a disc into drive E'.

I tried uninstalling the drive in the Device Manager then restart the PC and same thing happens.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

David

BTW my OS is XP SP3

It sounds like you are trying to burn a DVD using the built-in Windows
burning program.  If so, it is not capable of recognizing a blank DVD
because it is not able to burn DVD media.  It can only burn CD media.
You need to use third-party software (Roxio, Nero, etc.) to burn a DVD.
